Treeleaf Monthly Zazenkai

At the beginning of every month, usually on the first Friday/Saturday, the sangha gathers for a 4-hour practice period, led by our teacher and Treeleaf founder, Roshi Jundo Cohen.

The format of the meeting is as follows:

50’ Ceremony (Hannya Shingyo, Sandokai) & zazen

10’ Kinhin

30’ Zazen

20’ Kinhin

40’ Dharma Talk and short zazen

10’ Hokey-Pokey Dance

35’ Zazen

15’ Kinhin

30’ Metta practice & Zazen, Verse of Atonement, Four Vows and Closing

This zazen meeting is recorded and streamed live on YouTube and is open to everyone to join live or to sit at any time after the event. The monthly zazenkai usually follows a topic selected in advance by our teacher and includes a long format Dharma talk with a brief Q&A at the end, and just to remind ourselves that we need not be too uptight, we even include a brief practice of dancing to stretch the legs, get the blood pumping and lighten the mood.

The Dharma talks given during the monthly zazenkai are also available as a podcast on all streaming platforms

Friday, June 6 – 7th

Today we will dive into a classic set of Dogen Jazz:
“Ocean Mudra Samādhi” 海印三昧 , a swim lesson for the changing waters of daily life.  His wild wordplay is a powerful expression of who we are in the universe, time, being and bringing to life our swimming through life by swimming gracefully.
