My Life With Dogen - Talk by Kaz Tanahashi

    Hello all,

There is a new podcast up on Taigen Leighton's zendo site with Kaz Tanahashi talking about Dogen and his recently released full translation of Shobogenzo:

Also noticed Taigen has a new book out

Really enjoyed listening to this. Been enjoying Kaz's translation and great to hear him talk about it. Especially his first meeting with Suzuki Roshi.

I was listening to a podcast today and the Roshi was giving a talk on Dogen's Bendowa. Just to highlight the subjective nature of these subtle translations, he noted this interesting difference in translation of the first sentence, the first by Kaz Tanahashi and the second by Shohaku Okamura:

All buddha-tathaghatas together have been simply transmitting...

All buddha-tathaghatas independently have been simply transmitting...

So which is it, together or independently?

Highlights the usefulness of reading two translations together!

I tried to read and compare four different translations of the Bendowa in September but gave up after the first paragraph - it was like four different texts!

I often describe Dogen as like a jazz musician playing his syncopated variations riffing on Buddhist standards ...

And, like listening to Miles Davis play his most famous pieces live, he never did the same tune quite the same way twice. Also, the listeners can pick up different shades and dimensions of the very same CD listening on a different day with fresh ears. All good.

So, did Dogen mean "together" or "independently" or "independently together" or "togetherly independent"?

    Yeah, man! Digg it.

So Dogen was like Jerry Garcia... I can relate to that.
