Commentary on a bit of Shobogenzo

From Shobogenzo 'On the Great Realization' :

"Kegon Kyujo was a Dharma heir of Tozan. Kyujo was his personal name. A monk once asked him, "What is it like when a person who has experienced the great realization returns to being deluded?

The Master replied, "A broken mirror does no shed its light again: it would be difficult for a fallen blossom to climb back up on the tree."

    From Tobiah's deluded Muse:

she walked in the garden and
stepped on every neglected stone and
    wished for things...
    things did not come.
    every day in the garden
the morning dew held the sun-
facets, glints and bits of mirror,
    in which she placed hope,
    in which the sun existed
    for her,
    for she never looked up,
    where the source passed...
    she never saw the sun,
    but only the sun's story
    in the garden.

    was it only a story?
or is the garden also the sun?

    Greetings,

    Thank you for posting this!

I know Tozan's actual name was T'ung Shan. Do you know Kegon Kyujo's (Chinese) name?

    thanks,

Re: Commentary on a bit of Shobogenzo

    From the following page:
    http://www.wwzc.org/translations/masterList.htm

    I found this:
Baoji [Huayuan] Xiujing (Pao-chi Hua-yen Hsiu-ching, Hoji [Kegon] Kyujo), 9th C. A Dharma-heir of Dongshan Liangjie. See Dogen’s Chiji Shingi.

From which it appears (to me, who has never done any translation work at all) that perhaps his Chinese name was Huayuan Xiujing... I only draw this conclusion because I've seen a lot of Chinese/Japanese names which sound similar. Then I have to confess that I don't have any idea about proper pronunciation! So, this may be all for nothing.

Anybody have a good link to pronunciations?

Pronunciation varies from word to word in the Chinese language. There are four different tones: rising tone, falling tone, neutral tone and falling/rising tone

Depending on the word, any combination of these can be used. There is really no way of knowing the pronunciation of the name unless you hear it, or the tones are written for it.
