NEXT BOOK FOR TREELEAF BOOK CLUB ...

    Hi,

I would like to choose this book as our next book for the Treeleaf Book Club (once we are done with our Precepts study and Aitken Roshi's The Mind of Clover) ... What do you think?

Shunryu Suzuki Roshi's "Branching Streams Flow in the Darkness: Zen Talks on the Sandokai"

By the way, for this and other books, try bookfinder for a good new or used copy, delivered world-wide (it will even tell you the postal rate if overseas ... just change the shipping destination country) ... Some folks (in Finland!! for example ... it gives shipping rates to Finland) asked to know early, as it may take time to receive the book.

    http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?ac=sl ... 20sandokai

    From Publishers Weekly
This book is billed as a sequel to Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, Suzuki's classic collection of talks on Zen, but it stands on its own considerable merits as an eloquent, humorous series of lectures on the Sandokai, an eighth-century poem central to the Soto Zen tradition. These lectures show Suzuki, head priest of Tassajara monastery in California until his death in 1971, using his line-by-line exposition of the poem to illuminate what it means to practice Zen Buddhism. He stresses the simultaneity of the relative and the absolute, skillfully using words to direct his listeners toward understanding, all the while emphasizing that words are merely fingers pointing at the moon of enlightenment. Suzuki's devaluation of the verbal frees him to embrace humor and paradox as teaching methods; his examples range from ancient Chinese stories to anecdotes about weeding in the Tassajara garden and encountering an earwig. Readers of his previous book will be familiar with his earthy, clear, intense style. This book also conveys the texture of monastery life; it recounts 12 consecutive talks and includes the question-and-answer sessions at the end of each talk. These exchanges offer some of the most fascinating parts of an already excellent book, as they explicate some of the unclear points and illuminate the indirect yet confrontational quality of traditional Japanese Zen teaching.
We chant the 'Sandokai' ("The Identity of Relative and Absolute") during our monthly Zazenkai, during the Rohatsu Retreat, etc.

Do you think it absolutely a great choice, or just relatively so?

I'm very pleased you've picked this book. I've just been going through beginner's mind again and planned to get this one next, so thanks for the link too.

    Already on order.

Actually, I was ordering Opening the Hand of Thought today already and saw the selection. So, I picked that up too and I figure I'd want to read it anyway.

Seems like an excellent choice to me.

In the springtime I printed out the 'recommended reading list' here, and took it in hand to the one bookstore that I can walk to during lunch. I bought everything that I could find from that list that I saw on the shelves! Okay, so I maybe went a little overboard...but I read the Beginner's Mind first, and loved it. This I found easier to understand than a couple other books, so I know that I love his style of writing! I'll order this one to pick up in the next few week or so. Gassho, Ann

    Hi Jundo,

You've read my mind. I've just finished reading 'Not Always So' and was thinking of re-reading 'Branching Streams Flow in the Darkness' soon. (I think I first read it about 2 years ago.). Reading it together with the rest of the Sangha will be great - count me in!

Same ... but different. (I've got a million of em!)

"Not Always So" is this book ...

Contrary to Zen's principle of "nothing special," Brown (The Tassajara Bread Book; Tassajara Cooking) has indeed produced something very special: an edited collection of talks by beloved Zen Master Shunryu Suzuki, who died in 1971. It is impossible to overestimate the sustained impact of Suzuki's 1970 classic, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, a world-renowned bestseller. Brown, ordained by Suzuki in 1971 after six years of study under him, has edited transcriptions that both read well on the page and capture the style, humor and solid grasp evident in the first volume. But this is no Zen Mind sequel, and will prove highly valuable to anyone, rank novice or zazen master. These 35 talks, delivered shortly before Suzuki's death from cancer, sparkle with simple freshness and familiarity: "Our tendency is to be interested in something that is growing in the garden, not in the bare soil itself. But if you want to have a good harvest, the most important thing is to make the soil rich and cultivate it well. The Buddha's teaching is not about the food itself but about how it is grown, and how to take care of it." Suzuki's messages are like deceptive pools of water, shimmering with surface possibilities that provoke stronger swimmers to aim for the depths. Suzuki, too, beckons us to the deeper reaches of learning, becoming "a wise, warm-hearted friend, [and] an unseen companion in the dark." Again we are blessed with more of his superb vision.
    - an unseen companion in the dark." Again we are blessed with more of his superb vision.

welp I went back and forth on whether or not id actively participate this time around in the book club as often I'm a bit daft
That being said I really did enjoy reading the last book for the up coming Jukai and the discussion etc. So I decided to jump in and I have my copy of this book on order.

    Delivery estimate: January 22, 2009 - January 23, 2009
    Hope that soon enough ops:

Also while I was at it I picked up a few other items to add to my reading list:

Gateless Barrier: Zen Comments on the Mumonkan by Zenkai Shibayama
A Heart To Heart Chat On Buddhism With Old Master Gudo (by some familiar name )

and about a month or so ago i broke down and got all 4 books of Nishijima Roshi/Chodo Cross translation of Master Dogen's Shobogenzo.
(interestingly enough 1st book-as mentioned in another thread) is online and free for the reading - D'OH-well)
Should keep me busy for a good while!

Re: NEXT BOOK FOR TREELEAF BOOK CLUB ...

    Hi Fugen
Yes! I have downloaded and printed the Shasta abbey translation some time ago and read quite a bit of it. I Decided I wanted get a couple or 3 translations on the go. That in mind I decided to grab the Nishijima Roshi/Chodo Cross translation as well as follow up with recent translations by Mike Cross himself as he works away at them. Slow going but worth it to me. When reading any translation there is always a slight slant put on by the translator to a degree (in some cases due to the number of meanings for just one word). Just like I put my on slant on every thing I've read (thus i say that the Shasta abbey version seemed a bit flowery in comparison to another translation...doesn't make it so.)

That in mind I decided to grab the Gudo Nishijima Roshi/Chodo Cross translation as well as follow up with recent translations by Cross himself as he works away at them.

Always good to get some perspective. Anywho I'm putting my likes and dislikes in here but truth of the matter is Even if I was sitting with Dogen himself and could speak the language I'm sure id ass it up and have to ask for him to re word it - bring it down a level for me. Since I can't ask him to do that I'll just read what I can and take from it what i can. then do it all again.

Hmmm I have a lot of reading to do ops:

Re: NEXT BOOK FOR TREELEAF BOOK CLUB ...

    Hi.

I think Dirk (Shohei) is wise on this. That is why, when I do any talks on Shobogenzo (I am thinking to start Bendowa on the Sit-a-Long next week) I always post up on the blog two or three different translations, and from them maybe "triangulate" Master Dogen's original intent. He was like a free Jazz player sometimes, and I even think that (in the wilder portions of Shobogenzo) perhaps sometimes even he did not know where the music was taking him! But most of his writings are quite penetrable, although having the "opinions" of two or three great translators helps.

Awhile back, I did ask the noted Dogen scholar, Steve Heine:

    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b?url ... en&x=0&y=0

    (1) of all the Shobogenzo translations out there, which is the most "accurate" from the point of view of Buddhist scholarship and translation (i.e., most faithful to what Dogen actually wrote)? (2) which is the most readable by the non-specialist, while still being as faithful as possible to Dogen? I told him not to be polite to my teacher, Nishijima Roshi, in answering.

He said that, as far as Shobogenzo translations, Waddell/Abe, is perhaps the most "accurate" even though out of date in some ways (it is a reprint of renderings done in the 1970s). Tanahashi's several books are always very very good, and perhaps the most accessible to a non-scholar (at the intersection of literal accuracy and readability). He highly recommended those. Nishijima/Cross, he said, is the best of the complete translations, but it has many problems in grammar, typos and other small quirks (due to my teacher's limited English abilities and some peculiarities about Mike Cross' style and personal philosophy) that it is best for serious students who can pick out the minor problems and see the underlying strength.

The Soto Text project promises someday to be the best overall, but is coming out in small doses, still spotty and not quite living up to potential yet. Nishiyama/Stevens and Yokoi are to be avoided. Cleary, Masunaga, and Shasta all have some strengths, but are not nearly as good as the first sets above.

That is from a Dogen scholar's point of view.

    Hi Jundo,

I am writing to the whole group hoping that this can be useful to anybody else who is new like me to it. These are the supports, that would be great to receive for the "new-comers-isolated-in-remote-areas-with-bad-connection":

1- can anybody kindly send me via email the .pdf book(s) available on the internet as mentioned above? In fact from my African connection, it is pretty challenging (laptop crashing regularly when I tried). My email is fildib-zen@yahoo.com, many thanks for this

2- how does the book club work? is there a place on the web site where I can learn how this works in terms of logistics/timing/e-technology etc? thanks again for this too

However I have also ordered the book also in paper as suggested at the announcement and it should be here anytime (hopefully!)

Have a good day everybody and great to be in a group after many years of lonely (but happy anyway) sitting-alone.

    Cheers. Fil

    Hi Fil,

The links about should take you right to the PDF files for Shobogenzo. Just click click, and they should download to your computer. I could try to download, and email you, a file ... but it would be the same thing..

As to the book club, we read a chapter each week, then discuss by written posts (just like this). You can see some earlier discussions here ... I ask all 'book club members' to do their best to make at least one post per chapter.

Thanks Jundo for the reply. I forgot to say in my message that for some reason the emailing system works far much better for large attachments than the downloading system from the web pages (mysteries of the internet).

Regarding the Reading Schedule (thanks for the link), tell me if I am on the right track: I will keep an eye daily on the announcements area and I will subscribe to the group as soon as you announce that we start to read together. Correct?

Thanks again and sorry for the hassle of the explanations. When I get more acquainted with the TeaLeaf group dynamics, I am glad to prepare a short .doc where to explain to new comers (e-illiterate like me) the basic steps to follow for such activities. Unless this is already ready.

I just thought I'd also point out that the translation done by Gabriele Linnebach from Nishijima Roshi's Japanese version into German is simply beautiful - for those who speak the language. It's available in 4 volumes which were published from 2001 - 2008, the last of which just became available a few months ago (see http://www.shobogenzo.de). Presumably Mongen (Hans) and I are the only ones here at the moment for which it would be relevant, though...

That's great that you have contact with Steven Heine, Jundo. I think he's doing some really groundbreaking work and uncovering many aspects of Soto Zen which have been more or less ignored to date (at least in the West). As a matter of fact, I'm expecting a collection of essays (one of which is by him) to arrive today which I think you also mentioned recently - "Zen Ritual: Studies of Zen Buddhist Theory in Practice."

Hi Fil - I'd be glad to send you those PDFs, but I won't have access to my private e-mail until tomorrow evening. As far as the book club goes, no need to subscribe to anything additional, just keep an eye on the forum for the associated threads and you can post to them just like you're doing here. Have a great day too. Nice to have you here with us.

Branching Streams Flow in the Darkness is a beautiful book: the cover design, typeface, size and weight, the way it feels when I hold it...very sensual! It'll probably be at least to nice to actually read, too. I hope electronic or online books never push actual books off the shelves: a real book is a very satisfying object. Having said that, how wonderful to have a PDF of Shobogenzo. Thanks for that, Jundo.

    Hello Folks!

Just a quick note to second what Bansho wrote about the excellent translation by the untiring Gabriele Linnebach (the second edition of her translation of the first Shobogenzo volume will soon be available...when I met her during a sesshin last october, she said she had changed quite a few things because in retrosepect she wasn't too happy with her transaltion first time around). Who knows...maybe there are other German speaking "lurkers" here somewhere.

And YES, Zen Ritual is a definite must buy for everyone who likes his mythical legends but doesn't mind the odd historical reality check!!! You sure do come down from some famous zen clouds with this one.

Ok. So I cheated. I already perused the first chapter.

"We just sit. It is like something happening in the great sky. Whatever kind of bird flies through it, the sky doesn't care. That is the mind transmitted from Buddha to us." --pg. 30 - S. Suzuki.

I don't know why it hit me emotionally late night yesterday. But. Man. I couldn't stop coming back to that part of the chapter.
