The Twenty-sixth of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    26) The Twenty-sixth Gate: Dharma conduct.

Dharma conduct is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] we follow the conduct that is the Dharma.(Nishijima/Cross)

Practice of Dharma is a gate of realizing Dharma; it engages the practice of Dharma. (Tanahashi)

    Gate Gatha:
    May we, together with all buddhas;
    Be diligent in our practice,
That we may actualize conduct that is the Dharma.

    Reflection Prompts:

    1. What would be a good example of Dharma Conduct?

    2. Do you see any small differences in these two translations?

    3. Can you write a new gate gatha?

    Capping Verse:
    To follow Dharma
    Is Dharma
    What else could it be?

Thank you, Shokai, for bringing us the Twenty-Sixth Gate!

    1. What would be a good example of Dharma Conduct?
Following the Precepts, keeping the Bodhisattva Vows, walking the Eightfold Path, developing the Brahmaviharas.

    2. Do you see any small differences in these two translations?
Thus far, I think, these are the most closed translations of the Gates; in my reading, they say the same thing in very similar words.

    3. Can you write a new gate gatha?
    Following the Dharma
    Walking the Path
Is there any place to reach?

P.S.: I’m loving the practice of writing new capping verses. The verses we all are creating are beautiful and inspiring. Thank you all!

    Hi all and gassho

    1. What would be a good example of Dharma Conduct? - This would be following the buddhist path through the precepts or the eightfold path, as an example, which I hope would be done from a 'loving and devoted' heart.

    2. Do you see any small differences in these two translations? As a point of language, I like that Tanahashi refers to the 'practice of dharma' instead of dharma 'conduct', which can have a wee flavour of moralising, like a commandment.

    3. Can you write a new gate gatha?

    In delusion, we see
    dharma and not-dharma.
Let go of both and enter.
