    Summing Up Dogen ...

I wrote a book on "How to read Master Dogen," but if I were to sum up the old boy in just a few words, it would be something like this:

It's all sacred everywhere, all the world, right here, it's all Buddha and all the Ancestors, it's all each other. So, live gently, attentively and with grace and care, honoring such fact. Sit Zazen, free of intentions for nothing is lacking, sit free of goals for all is here. Sit because sitting is sacred, the posture of Buddha, Buddha sitting Buddha. Sit the Sitting which embodies these truths. Just Sit, Just Live with Care.

    Something like that.

Being a novice priest doesn't mean my writing about the Dharma is more substantial than yours. Actually, it might well be the other way round.

    Jundo,

After reading this, I agree 1,000 percent. It is such a beautiful teaching. I am so grateful to you and this sangha for giving me this opportunity to come back home to this practice again. Dogen was very unique in his approach. Not all forms of Buddhism and not all forms of Zen for that matter tend to the practice in this way. A simple but deeply profound way of being.
