    Goodbye West Burton

How would you say goodbye to a coal-fired power station?

West Burton 'A' (in England, 68 miles from my home) will not be operating on a commercial basis, it is a standby arrangement to support energy security. As of September 2022, the station no longer has any Capacity Market contracts to fulfil and it will move into its full decommissioning phase in April 2023.

West Burton may be (nearly) obsolete now, but I imagine it brought warmth and power to many many people within its lifespan, and created jobs too.

Worryingly, although West Burton is closing, prospecting for oil continues and the government is trying to regenerate interest for fracking. It is also proposing to open a new coal mine in Cumbria: https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/news/g...nrick-climate/
