I should be ready for May through July, and I don't imagine there are any days right now that I am unavailable.

    Gassho,

Thank you for being the warmth in my world.

I’m available whenever you see fit. Just put my name down whenever.

Give me a week or so to get the tools together and practice. As to dates I am available, put me down where I am needed (except May 13 and July 15) and I will let you know if that works. There are "unplanned plans" in the works at the moment that will take me away but I will know a couple weeks in advance.

I can take May 20 if that's fine with everyone.

    Hi all,

I would be happy to attempt the Long session on June 3rd if available.
I'm starting a new job in another city on July 1 so I don't currently know if I'll be home or have access to technology that evening--can you pencil me in for that date?
Understanding that more is better, how much advance notice is needed if I request a date and end up not being able to attend? I don't expect this to happen often, it's simply that I'm not certain yet if there may be events scheduled for some Fridays in the next handful of months. I should know more solidly after July 1!
    Sorry to run long.

Are you sure that you will be ready for the "Big Show" of the Long Zazenkai by then, Showan, including chanting Heart Sutra in Japanese and the melody of "Identity of Relative and Absolute" (which, by the way, was composed by Bernie Glassman Roshi, vaguely inspired by "Fiddler on the Roof" ... but that is a story for another time! )

I think that, if you can't come, it would be nice to write to the others on the team here to find a replacement. If there is no time for that, we will see who is around the Zazenkai who can fill in short notice or, as the final back-up, I will "one man band" it myself during a Zazenkai. No problem, but do try to come if you commit.

Your volunteer spirit is much appreciated, Sho. Showan in the Big Show!

Ha! if you mess up, I can’t do anything about it. I can, however, cover your back if you can’t show up at all

Do you mean by Bernie or by anyone? Cause we have it in every monthly zazenkai so you can hear it in any of the recordings!

    Hi Aprapti,

I learned it from my mentor, Doshin Cantor, through his White Plum group where I sat for years. I agree with Bion that all our monthly Zazenkai are the best examples. I looked around online, but did not find any sound or video in the same style.

Put me in, coach, I'm ready to play!
All joking aside, I have an easier time with the syllable breaks of the Japanese Heart Sutra than the English one. And I grew up watching Fiddler at least twice a year thanks to my musical-loving philosemitic mom, so no worries there for me--the hard part is going to be not saying "Sandokai" like Topol says "Tradition!" in the movie
I have an inkin, a small rin, and a mokugyo--is there a preference/guidance for when to use the inkin vs. the rin?

    Thanks,
    Showan

Mazeltov! I have you booked for June 3rd, the Long Zazenkai! Lovely, Showan.

I am finishing a training thread for the Long Zazenkai Ino-Doan, still under construction. I will make sure that it has some information on which bell or block is which.

    Hi Jundo

I know I have only just returned but I'd be happy to join the roster for the second half of the year. I've been to enough/watched enough zazenkai's to be fairly comfortable with the format and chanting. Just need to acquire a mokugyo.

    Hi Jundo

August 12th (13th my end) locked and loaded - gassho, Tokan.

Yes, of course, will not rush out and buy a swish mokugyo just for the occasion lol - have a couple of things in my 'buddhist kit', I'm sure a mock-mokugyo will be around the house somewhere!

    Gassho again, Tokan satlah

    Thank you too.

If you would like to read more about the Identity of Relative and Absolute chant here at Treeleaf, and what Joan Halifax said about how she and Bernie Glassman came up with that melody, I made this thread. I don't believe I posted the link here before:

I sure have. I know the heart sutra in English, eko, and other bits by heart as I try to recite them every day before zazen. When I sit zazenkai offline I often 'pretend' to be the ino.
