Thread: Has single-pointed concetration i.e. object-based concentration a place in Soto-ZEN?

I used to puzzle over Daido Loori Roshi’s reference to “joriki,” the development of focus during meditation, but have come to believe that it was coming from the “Rinzai side” of his practice. If anything, my attempts to use that teaching hindered my learning of Shikantaza.

...sometimes all the words in these deep threads are like music. Y'all keep talking, and I'll just dance to it.

It occurs to me that my attachment to this body is entirely arbitrary. All the evidence is subjective.

    Hi Chris,

I like to watch (and re-watch) these videos, helps with perspective. These might be helpful (in any way, and in addition to Jundo's teachings(!)) for you:

    Hi Matt,

I am sure that not everything they teach at Headspace is like Shikantaza, and I believe that what they present is more of a "mindfulness" meditation. However, what is presented in those two videos your posted is perfectly compatible with Shikantaza. We "non-try" and let thoughts go without stirring up the "traffic" or grabbing on or hopping in a for a ride.

    Hi Hokin,

A little off topic but I noticed in your signature you have the caligraphy of your Dharma name.

Curious, how/where did you find/do that?

I'd very much like to do the same!

Long ago (remembering that you undertook Jukai here?), I sent you an email explaining your Dharma Name, and links to an explanation of the Kanji. I believe that you can just paste those into your profile footer.

    Hi Jundo,

In all honesty, I'd forgot about the details of the email. Today was a wonderful reminder at Jukai and of course, reading that email again has a lot of resonance and renewed meaning.

    Thank you again, for everything.

P.S. I may or may not have a new signature
