Thread: What is a Tradition?

    What is a Tradition?

I found Treeleaf in a haphazard, accidental sort of way, but I am really glad I am here. Yet I am still puzzled about something - in following Nyoho-e, is Treeleaf under the umbrella of Soto, or parallel to it? Thank you.

I am just a priest-in-training, please do not take anything I say as a teaching.

Like Geika said, we are Soto.

We also follow in the Nyoho-e tradtion just like Shunryu Suzuki in San Francisco and Dainin Katagiri first in San Francisco and then Minnesota Zen Center. Jundo's teacher Gudō Wafu Nishijima was a student of Kōdō Sawaki who advocated the importance of nyoho-e.

    Not two but one.

I am just a priest-in-training, any resemblance between what I post and actual teachings is purely coincidental.

Yes, we are Soto Zen, as Soto as Soto can be. Nyoho-e is the way of Kodo Sawaki, Katagiri and other great Soto teachers.

But do you mean the "Soto-shu" in Japan? Like the great majority of Soto teachers in the west, we are not under their administrative ecclesiastical governance. I think by survey of the SZBA that less than 30% of the Soto priests in North America are (not sure about Europe and South America). In Japan, their role is primarily focused on parish temple inheritance, and rather dusty and church-like, so most Soto priests not interested in such do not bother (although I was formally ordained and registered with the Soto-shu, and my Dharma grandpa was the head of Soto-shu and abbot of Eiheiji, Nishijima Roshi wanted to stay an outsider to all that.)

We are members of the SZBA, like most Soto Zen teachers in America, but there again, there are other fine Soto Zen folks who don't even bother with that too!

Thank you everyone who replied here.

Is Nyoho-e purely related to sewing or is there a Nyoho-e philosophy or Nyoho-e teachings unrelated to sewing?
