The title of Rōshi essentially means ‘old master’ or ‘old teacher’ and is an honorific bestowed on respected and loved teachers, similar to the use of Rinpoche (‘precious one’) in Tibetan Buddhism.

Jundo has never cared much for official titles and often says that Rōshi translates as ‘old Zen guy’. However, although as he says he would have refused this from most people, his respect for Daiho Hilbert (https://daihozen.blogspot.com/p/about-me.html) led to this beautiful ceremony at Clear Mind Zendo in New Mexico in August 2017.
