    ARTS: Konoha Gallery

    Greetings, artistic Sangha,

Welcome to the Konoha Gallery! This thread is an ongoing place for you to show us your creative, two-dimensional works. Paintings, drawings, digital images; basically, if you created it by moving something like a pencil or a brush or a stylus across a flat surface, please put it here for your Sangha to enjoy and (positively) comment on. We really do want to see it!

Any painting or drawing, whether created as a zenga (a Zen, sumi-e ink painting or calligraphy; the classic example is an enso), a modern abstract painting, or a quick sketch for your kid's lunch bag, they all deserve attention here. The rule is that you must be the person who created what you post in this thread. It is totally fine for you to post your copy of another artist's work, usually accompanied by "With apologies to [Michelangelo]" or "after Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus."

A note on comments: Please feel at liberty to express your appreciation and encouragement for other's work. Please do not feel at liberty to critique, offer advice, or instruct. This is a zone of encouragement.

To prove that any level of work is welcome here, I offer an early Nengei original:
    IMG_2765.jpeg
    Gradient Squares

And to restore your eyes, I will offer a later painting:
    IMG_3841 (1).jpeg
Yixing Teapot (2020). After an original photograph
by Kevin Murphy. Oils on loose cotton canvas. 9x12 inches.

Just a note that Konoha is "Treeleaf" in Japanese. Our Sangha's "official" name in Japanese is the "Ko no ha" (木之葉) Zendo, in which the first character means (and looks like) a tree (木), the "no" (之) is a possessive (like an apostrophe 's in English), and the final kanji (葉) means leaf. So, it means "tree's leaf" or "leaf of the tree" ... Treeleaf. Here is the name written by Nishijima Roshi as it hangs over our Zendo door in Tsukuba ...

I was sitting with my kids drawing stuff, so I decided to draw a dragon.
It lived for 7 minutes and disappeared into impermanence.

More nice work, John! Remember to do sitting Zazen each day before posting, and note that under your name: "Sat today" or "ST." It's one of our ways of stressing the importance of Zazen.

Horin, wonderful! A fiery dragon, indeed! POOF!

Some manga/anime lovers may recognise the name Konoha from the Naruto series. The village of the protagonist is called Konoha village or Konohagakure and the official translation of the village is "Village Hidden in the Leaves" or "Hidden Leaf Village". Just a quick fun fact

Here are a couple of recent works of mine; not particularly Buddhist, but then you can find Dharma everywhere if you look for it.

Franz, those are simply stunning! Wow!

You've inspired me as I've wanted to dive into something different for a new visual practice. Are you using regular "western" watercolors and brushes, or are you using sumi-e materials and techniques?

Thanks for your kind words Nengei & Seikan
I just entered the world of watercolor. To start without pretentiousness, I bought a simple 24 colours Winsor and Newton beginner's set and some inexpensive brushes and paper on amazon (in case I would drop after a couple of paintings). But I admit I am very fashinated by the world of ink wash painting techniques and sumi e. Maybe one day I'll give it a try
    Have a nice weekend!!

I am blowing the dust off and resurrecting the paint and drawing department. I have not been very attentive, but it is because I have been painting and teaching, having made the move to full-time professional art about 6 months ago.

Anyway, I will post more, and I encourage you to do the same!

Here is a recent little study I did that I believe you will enjoy. The painting is oils on board-mounted canvas, 9x12 inches. I do not know the identity of the person in the figure, but when I saw it I had to have it. It is Japanese, and modern. The vase is also modern and is Chinese. The apple is a locally grown Fuji, I think. The pine cone came from… somewhere… and normally sits on my altar.
