    Effective altruism

While reflecting on ways to LAH, I remembered a podcast from Sam Harris on effective altruism (https://samharris.org/podcasts/being...nd-doing-good/). Not all charities are equal, and not all projects are equally effective. I thought I would share these links with the community. Thank you for helping me consider opportunities for cultivating compassion.

Thanks for that. Giving is not merely throwing money at problems, and not all charities are the same. It is one reason to check the reputation and rating of charities through services such as these (to see how much money is blown on executive salaries and advertising, versus actually being spent on the work itself):

Also, sometimes it is more effective to give to experts and to dedicated groups. For example, the same dollar used to buy 1 homeless person a sandwich can often be used by a reputable food bank to feed dozens of people. Also, giving money to the food bank (so they can spend it effectively) is usually much better than giving the equivalent in canned goods or the like.

    Thank you for the reminder.

As an Executive Director of a small non-profit, two things I would suggest.

Don't become overly fixated on what percentage of money raised goes to overhead and administration. It is not an unimportant factor, but it is only one metric, and not the most important one. Some operations just require slightly more overhead to deliver their service. And will lose impact if they try to cut those expenses too harshly.

Give to the organization as a whole, not to specific projects, or with restrictions on how the money must be used. Non-profits are always in desperate need of unrestricted funds, that they can use where most needed. Grants and corporate sponsorships want their names associated with new programs and new builds. But none of that matters if the non-profit can't pay for the lights and computers for staff and the salaries of the bookkeepers and receptionists.

Anyway, just a couple thoughts from the non-profit side. Thank you to all of you who support the work non-profit organizations do.
