I've heard good things about a mob called Treeleaf. Not sure how close they are to Tokyo but they're just up the road from me in rural Queensland, Australia, just around the corner from Saskatchewan in Canada and pretty much on the doorstep of Arizona in the US and the Orkney Isles off the coast of Scotland, UK.

    Hi Sam,

My Dharma Brother Peter has a small Zen group that meets on Saturdays ...

    https://www.meetup.com/Dogen-Sangha-Tokyo/

Soto-shu has a list of Soto Zen centers that welcome foreigners (i.e., someone there speaks English) in the "C" group around Tokyo here

    https://global.sotozen-net.or.jp/eng...r/index.html#C

This page is a little old, but l bet these groups are still going. Some are Rinzai or mixed Soto-Rinzai in flavor ...

Treeleaf is about an hour from Akihabara in Tokyo so a little far, but let you friend know that he/she is always welcome to come sit one day here.

    To this end,

I am strongly considering a trip to Japan later this year/early next year. The main 'agenda' would be surrounding Zen and Buddhism. This will, of course involve a visit to Tree Leaf and Jundo - if I am welcome to crash the party - and, ideally, I would like to spend some time at a temple and sit sesshin (similar to Kyonin).

Is there any temples/retreats that would take me? It's one of those things I should look into in advance for scheduling, budget, etc.

I am very grateful to be relatively close to Japan from Vietnam!

    Thank you in advance!

    Gassho,

    Hi Brad,

Antaiji, where Kyonin stayed, does not accept short term visitors, and did us a big favor in welcoming Kyonin, There are actually very few places in Japan for foreigners to have such an experience. So, l would contact these folks and see ...

    https://global.sotozen-net.or.jp/eng...igner/1-8.html

Report back to me, please, on what they say. They might also suggest some other places (Soto) in Japan as well.

Also, a Rinzai place to contact

    http://www.tekishin.org/english/index.htm

There are places also where one can go for a quick overnight taste, but they are not so serious.

Brad, actually, I remembered that Antaiji does have two retreats each year in which they accept visitors. However, they tend to fill up fast ...

I contacted Antaiji, they are open for people to attending Sesshin in October, it is my intention to go. I also contacted Soto-Zen.net.

I will report their response back here for you and other Sangha members.
