    Sept 27th-2th, 2019 - OUR MONTHLY (Oct.?) 4-hour Treeleaf ZAZENKAI with Rev. KYONIN!

    Our Zazenkai Welcomes Rev. Kyonin Barros to Japan from far off Mexico! ...

    ... so, our "October" Zazenkai is a little early this month!

    Please 'sit-a-long' with our MONTHLY 4-hour ZAZENKAI, netcast LIVE 8am to noon Japan time Saturday morning (that is New York 7pm to 11pm, Los Angeles 4pm to 8pm, 6pm to Midnight in Mexico City (Friday night), London midnight to 4am and Paris 1am to 5am (early Saturday morning)) ... and visible at the following link during those times ...

    ... and to be visible on the following screen during those times and sit-a-long-able any time thereafter ...

    LIVE ZAZENKAI NETCAST IS HERE:

    ZAZENKAI BEGINS 3 MINUTES FROM START OF THE VIDEO

    Dharma Talk Audio / Podcast Episode:
    LINK TO BE POSTED HERE IN THE COMING DAYS

    FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO JOIN TO SIT LIVE WITH A CAMERA, A LINK TO JOIN WILL BE POSTED BELOW IN THIS THREAD. JUST CLICK AND JOIN BEFORE START TIME. 'TWO WAY' REQUIRES INDIVIDUALS WITH CAMERAS, BUT ANYONE CAN WATCH LIVE 'ONE WAY' AND SIT-A-LONG VIA THE ABOVE SCREEN. IF JOINING WITH CAMERA, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR MICROPHONE IS MUTED:

    The Sitting Schedule is as follows:

    00:00 - 00:50 CEREMONY (HEART SUTRA IN JAPANESE / SANDOKAI IN ENGLISH) & ZAZEN
    00:50 - 01:00 KINHIN
    01:00 - 01:30 ZAZEN
    01:30 - 01:50 KINHIN

    01:50 - 02:30 DHARMA TALK & ZAZEN
    02:30 - 02:40 KINHIN & HOKEY-POKEY

    02:40 - 03:15 ZAZEN
    03:15 - 03:30 KINHIN
    03:30 - 04:00 METTA CHANT & ZAZEN, VERSE OF ATONEMENT, FOUR VOWS, & CLOSING

    Our Zazenkai consists of our chanting the 'Heart Sutra' in Japanese and the 'Identity of Relative and Absolute (Sandokai)' in English (please download our Chant Book at the link below), some full floor prostrations (please follow along with me ... or a simple Gassho can be substituted if you wish), a little talk by me ... and we close with the 'Metta Chant', followed at the end with the 'Verse of Atonement' and 'The Four Vows'. Oh, and lots and lots of Zazen and walkin' Kinhin in between!

    Please download and print out the Chants we will recite at the following link (PDF):

    Chant Book (PDF)

    or

    Chant Book (SHORT VERSION HTML)

    Not everyone realizes that they can join in the Chanting of the Heart Sutra, Identity of Relative & Absolute, Metta Verses, Verse of Atonement and Four Vows (although we ask that you keep your microphone down). Please follow along with the Chant Book, and let your voice ring!

    I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT YOU POSITION YOUR ZAFU ON THE FLOOR IN A PLACE WHERE YOU ARE NOT STARING DIRECTLY AT THE COMPUTER SCREEN, BUT CAN GLANCE OVER AND SEE THE SCREEN WHEN NECESSARY. YOUR ZAFU SHOULD ALSO BE IN A POSITION WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE COMPUTER SCREEN WHILE STANDING IN FRONT OF THE ZAFU FOR THE CEREMONIES, AND HAVE ROOM FOR BOWING AND KINHIN.

    ALSO, REMEMBER TO SET YOUR COMPUTER (& SCREEN SAVER) SO THAT IT DOES NOT SHUT OFF DURING THE 4 HOURS.

    I hope you will join us ... an open Zafu is waiting. When we drop all thought of 'here' 'there' 'now' 'then' ... we are sitting all together!

    Gassho, Jundo

    PS - There is no "wrong" or "right" in Zazen ... yet here is a little explanation of the "right" times to Bow (A Koan) ...

    Our Heart Sutra recital will be in Spanish this time ...

    El Sutra de la Perfección de la Gran Sabiduría
    (Sutra del corazón)

    * * *//
    El Sutra de la Perfección de la Gran Sabiduría *

    Avalokiteshvara bodhisattva, quien despertó
    al Prajna Paramita, la Perfección de la Gran Sabiduría *
    Percibió el vacío de las Cinco Condiciones
    y se liberó del sufrimiento.
    O Shariputra, la forma equivale al vacío;
    el vacío equivale a la forma;
    la forma es precisamente el vacío, el vacío es precisamente la forma.
    Las sensaciones, percepciones, formaciones y consciencia también son así.
    O Shariputra, todas las cosas son expresiones del vacío,
    Nada nace, ni se destruye, nada se mancha, nada es puro;
    Nada se oculta, nada nace.
    Por eso el vacío no es la forma; no hay sensación, no hay percepción, no hay formación, no hay consciencia.
    No existen ojos, oído, nariz, lengua, cuerpo ni mente.
    No existen los sentidos de la vista, oído, olfato, gusto, tacto, ni objeto mental;
    No hay reino de la vista, no hay reino de la consciencia;
    No existe la ignorancia, no existe el fin a la ignorancia;
    No hay vejez ni muerte;
    No hay cesación de vejez ni muerte;
    No hay sufrimiento, no existe causa o fin para el sufrimiento;
    No hay camino, no hay sabiduría y nada qué ganar.
    Nada qué ganar, por ende los Bodhisattvas viven en Prajna Paramita*
    Sin ningún obstáculo mental-
    Sin obstáculos el miedo se va.
    Más allá del autoengaño, el Nirvana siempre ha estado aquí.
    Todos los Budas pasados y futuros
    Viven en Prajna Paramita*
    Y alcanzan la suprema y completa iluminación.
    Por eso entiende que Prajna Paramita
    es el mantra sagrado el mantra luminoso,
    el mantra supremo, el mantra incomparable
    con el que el sufrimiento se va
    Esto es la verdad
    Por ello entona el mantra de Prajna Paramita
    Canta este mantra y proclama *
    Gate Gate
    Paragate
    Parasamgate
    Bodhi! Soaka!
    Han Nya Shin Gyo * * *//

    We will be dancing the Great Mambo No. 8 of the renowned band leader Dámaso Perez Prado, featuring the Charlie Chaplain of Mexico, comedian Resortes (today played by Kyonin) and actress Ninon Sevilla (that's Jundo) ...

    This is the first time I have read the Heart Sutra in Spanish, and for some reason it resonates more with me than the English version.
    A while ago I read a few chapters of the Shobogenzo in Spanish - the same. I think I should explore this avenue of reading Dharma related things in Spanish...
    (Sorry for the off-topic!)

    Anyway, I won't make it live (too late), but will sit this on another day.
    Looking forward to see Kyonin together with Jundo!

    No lo puedo creer!

    I think I will miss it. Maybe I can join later, perhaps.

    What a wonderful translation of the Sutra!!!
    I used to recite another, rough, translation with the local sangha, but this one is beautiful, more poetic.

    Who did it?

    I will surely sit with you over the weekend.

    (I guess today I could be excused because it's my birthday, and my family wants to take me out for dinner?)

    Hi everyone,

    To join the Zazenkai two way, here is the Zoom meeting link:
    https://zoom.us/j/4834831244

    If you have not installed Zoom, following the above link should walk you through installing Zoom as an app on your mobile device or as a desktop client under Windows, Mac, or Linux. If you have already installed the Zoom desktop client or mobile app, you can use the link above, or simply open Zoom and join with the following meeting id: 483 483 1244

    Here are a few other notes and tips for using Zoom that we've learned over the past weeks:

    - When you first join, you'll need to choose an audio source (usually you can simply select "Join with Computer Audio" on desktop or "Call using Internet Audio" on mobile).

    - When you first join, you *should* be automatically muted (this is how the room is set up, but I'm still not 100% this works as expected -- please let me know if anyone discovers otherwise).

    - Each participant can switch between the "speaker view" (the default view) and "gallery view" (a grid / Hollywood Squares / Brady Bunch style view) whenever they would like
    -- On desktop, click the "gallery view" / "speaker view" toggle button on the top right
    -- On mobile, swipe right for "gallery views" -- only 4 participants are shown at a time on mobile, so keep swiping right to go through different groups, swipe left to go back to the "gallery view"
    -- During the Zazenkai, the Doshi (Jundo) should always be "pinned", so in "speaker view" you'll never see anyone else

    - You can mute, unmute, etc. with the control bar on the bottom of the screen
    -- On desktop, hover the mouse over the window and the control bar should pop up
    -- On mobile, tap the screen and the control bar should pop up
    -- On mobile, so that your own picture does not take up one of the four slots you see, you can tap for the control bar, then tap "... menu" and select "Remove myself from gallery view"

    - The free version of Zoom will only allow you to HOST meetings up to 40 minutes long, but you can JOIN meetings of any length (the Zazenkai, etc.) with it.

    ps. Nikolas, there are two good talks on The Heart Sutra in Domyo Burk's Zen Studies podcast series:
    The Heart Sutra pt 1
    The Heart Sutra pt 2

    Thich Nhat Hanh's 'The Heart of Understanding' is a good introduction to the sutra in my opinion. Red Pine's translation and commentary goes deeper. There is also good material in Shohaku Okumura's book 'Living By Vow'

    What a joy it was to see you in Japan Kyonin. Sitting, playing and dancing with our teacher Jundo.
    Your talk about finding a teacher being akin to finding a mirror was timely and reaffirming. As was your commentary on taking refuge in the Three Jewells. Your Hetfield quote made me laugh out loud and showed me a side of you that I had not seen in my short time with Treeleaf. The dancing was NEXT LEVEL this week and if pressed I'd give Doyu 10/10 for her interpretive dance routine hehehe. It was brilliant! Finally the Metta chant today was incredibly moving for me.
    I experienced a significant loss of a loved one last week and as I shared with Jundo and my Ango partner Tokan I found myself automatically seeking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha which as a relatively new practitioner kinda shocked me. I'm still feeling incredibly numb and rather disconnected from everything and everyone. I still sit my daily 4am Zazen but aside from Samu my Jukai studies, Rakusu sewing and other Ango commitments went down the drain for almost a week.
    Yesterday I started afresh with the Ango commitments that had lapsed but was still feeling numb and disconnected. Sitting with you all at this very special Zazenkai has reminded me how important my relationship with this Sangha is and how grateful I am to Kokuu who is solely responsible for steering me to Treeleaf where I found my Teacher.
    Thank you again Kyonin for conducting this Zazenkai, thank you Sekishi for being our tech wizard today, and finally thank you Jundo for being you.

    Deepest of bows and much love to all.

    OK only two thirds through but had to jump in and thank Kyonin for his talk. His final comments and quotes epitomise the uniqueness and specialness of Treeleaf, where else would you find a Priest quoting Metallica ! When Kyonin made a similar reference not long after I joined Treeleaf, that along with Jundo's teaching confirmed I had truly found my home.

    Today recalling the last few words of the song, it dawned on me as a reminder of One/Emptyness, life/death no death "My body lies but still I roam"

    Yet to fully find in myself what would be reflected in that mirror but know where to come when I finally find and need confirmation.

    Thank you Kyonin for sharing your experiences.
