DONE! HAVE A LOOK: Women Ancestors / Differently-Abled Ancestors Kechimyaku Design

    NOTE: PROJECT COMPLETED!

    Dear All,

I need a volunteer with some simple design skills to make a very very simple design of a one page Kechimyaku (Blood Line Chart), one sided I think, very simple and minimalist, that lists the Women Ancestors and the Differently-Abled Ancestors. Our friend Meitou suggested the idea, and I will include it with the Rakusu Mailings this year (maybe even make it available for download somehow by past Jukai recipients should they want one.)

It does not have to be fancy at all, nothing as intricate as our Kechimyaku for the traditional Zen Ancestors that many of our past Jukai recipients already have. Just a list with some nice font and simple design. Maybe a page with the two lists side by side or continuing from each other? I found a fancier one that makes a circle/Enso of the Women's names, but it does not have to be anything like that:

This one is a simple list, with some design added ...

Maybe our could have our treeleaf mark, rather than bamboo? Lots of open space on the page, black ink on wide open space.

Just an idea. I leave the design to the designer's eye (all designs subject to approval, of course).

It should print on Japanese A4 paper if possible. I will print it out, add stamps, then copy onto nice Japanese style paper.

The lists we have are the following, and it would have text at the top like the following (Everyone, please feel free to suggest changes):

    ================================================== =========

Treeleaf Blood Lineage Chart of the Women and Differently-Abled Ancestors

We honor and recognize those Ancestors who have brought us here, those who encountered barriers of sex and birth, those of different body and special mind so often misunderstood by the many, those who may have been met with exclusion or fear, those for whom the Path was filled with obstacles and barriers, we honor those for whom entrance was so often denied and halls once barred, the successive generations of Buddhas and Ancestors who transmitted the flame:

Thank you for following through with this Jundo. If no-one steps forward - please do someone! - I will have a go at it myself.
Is Japanese A4 the same size as Western A4?

    Hi Meitou!

I have had a go and sent something to Jundo but imagine you would do a better job that me.

Will send you a copy of what I did.

    Dear All,

Well, I would like to thank Kokuu for the basic design, I added the red "bloodline" and played with the font. Thank you to Meitou for the suggestion, and also to Zenmei for his research in identifying the Differently-Abled Ancestors on our list, and to Kokuu for helping to create the ceremony during Rohatsu where their names will be recited.

A copy of the following will be mailed to all our Jukai Recepients this year together with their Rakusu backs and traditional Bloodline Lineage chart, and it will also be available to download from that time for anyone who has taken Jukai here in past years.

I think it came out nicely ....

The bloodline just comes from somewhere, and goes to somewhere, for all those whose names are unsaid and unknown.

    What do you think?

    Happy Birthday, Frank.

Zen Buddhists don't quite believe in time, so no getting older (no being born for that matter). Thus, Happy Non-Birthday too!

Thanks a lot to all involved! Great work.

It is reassuring to see that the transmission of the flame did not stop at barriers, be it of mental or physical nature. Deep bows to those whose names are now known, and to those whose good deeds remain forgotten

Do all of the differently-abled ancestors come from the extensive record mentioned by Jundo in the thread Research on a "Differently Enabled Ancestors List" - Volunteers or did you use other sources as well?

    Hi Souchi,

    Yes, barriers fall.

All the names did come from that research paper I mentioned, done by a fellow who seems to have spent years searching all available Buddhist texts for mention of the disabled. Most of the mentions of disability in old Buddhist texts were not positive, typically attributing such condition to Karma from past lives that justified barring such individuals. I think it good that the times are changing.
