October 12th-13th Treeleaf Weekly Zazenkai - Welcoming Trump Buddha

ATTENTION: Our Zazenkai today replaces our usual wooden Buddha statue on the Altar with Donald Trump Buddha. This is not a political statement (except as some philosophers say that all things are politics). Rather, it is a call to look beyond the politics, me vs. you, us vs. them, likes and dislikes, left vs. right, loves and hates, anger and argument that may be engendered in so many of us by politics today. In our sitting, we sit as the still and whole source of all that, found beyond yet right at the heart of all the division and chaos of the world, known when our heart is still and whole.

Of course, when we rise from the Zazen cushion, there is time, and so much need, for politics and social action. This is not a call to be passive, uncaring or to neglect engaged action, not by any means. However, let us keep our political concerns and actions imbued with this same stillness and unity even as we get moving and act. This world of me and you, love and hate, rich and poor, borders and wars needs so much fixing. Part of that fixing requires our getting beyond this culture of me vs. you, us vs. them, anger and argument. This may be difficult for those who today see here only a symbol for values they oppose, and not beyond that, to the peace and union at the heart of all opposites.

In our Ceremony today, we recite a dedication of our hopes and aspirations:
To the healing of hatred in all countries and among all peoples
To the wisdom and compassion of our world leaders To the peace of the world and harmony of all beings.

If you believe in nurturing a heart of peace as we work together for a world of peace, please come sit with us. LET'S MAKE THE UNIVERSE GREAT AGAIN! Actually, it already is.

Yes, today we will break the "formal rule" that usually we sit in dark and not patterned clothing.

Also, since clothing is optional (please just do not get us kicked off Youtube for violating their nudity standards however, please!!) you can also be colorful and ugly.

Jundo, I joined one-way tonight, however, I profoundly felt 'one' with the Tree Leaf sangha.

I want to share a metaphor I made up this evening before I began preparing for Zazenkai. Dinner was late, because my wife got home from her violin lessons late, she wanted to practice her musical instrument during Zazenkai. I explained the process of Zazenkai to her, about when the microphone is on, and how the Ino sings the sutra's. To make it relatable, I told her it's like when she is working tirelessly from 6 o' clock to 10 ' o clock in the morning, really she is an insomniac! She is ready to relax at her lunch table, for a coffee break. I told her "Zazenkai is like a coffee break for life, where we take time to get refilled spiritually". Correct me if I'm wrong.

Question, if I'm following along with the Ino during chanting, is there any point where we don't chant-a-long with the Ino?

Good question! Basically, it is good to chant along with the Heart Sutra from ...

    EVERYONE =

    A/vo/lo/ki/tes/va/ra/ Bo/dhi/satt/va/ ...
... but not the Dedication, which starts ...

Buddha Nature pervades the whole universe, Reality, existing right here now ...
Our Chant Book is here, for those who don't have it by some chance.

    A further note on today's theme ...

I just want to emphasize that there is nothing about the ceremony or Zazen which prevents us from getting up, getting our asses in gear, and working to protect the environment and on other social problems, or for political change. Quite the contrary. In fact, one of the folks in our Sangha is an aid worker in Africa who tries to do health work in the face of hard conditions and bureaucracy. He says that he would have burned out long ago in the Sisyphean effort if he could not sit down once or twice a day, put it down and, most vitally, see through it to something more.
