    A Film I Know Nothing About ... Recommendation ...

    Hi,

I just stumbled on this clip for a new film coming out, I know next to nothing about it, but will recommend it whole heartedly based on this clip alone ...

Lana Wilson follows up her award-winning documentary After Tiller with this lyrical, intimate character study of the complex figure Ittetsu Nemoto, an aimless and rebellious former punk rocker-turned-Buddhist priest. Most famously, he is renowned in Japan for saving the lives of countless suicidal men and women through his wise and compassionate counsel. But Nemoto is now approaching middle-age with a wife and young boy of his own, when he learns his life is at risk from heart disease, compounded by the heavy emotional workload of supporting those who no longer want to live. When saving others takes such a toll, can he find the resiliency to save himself? The Departure is an intimate portrait of one quietly extraordinary man who has helped so many learn to live, and now must find the strength to learn from his own advice.

The film should not be confused with another Japanese film also not to be missed, the Oscar winning "Departures" ...

The film website says it is available on iTunes, if it's not available at a local theater.

No merit. Vast emptiness; nothing holy. I don't know.

I was able to rent the film earlier in the week on iTunes. I highly recommend it. Thought provoking themes of the meaning or purpose of living, our interconnectedness with other people, what we place value on, and so much more.

If you are unable to see the film, it was inspired by a 2013 article in The New Yorker, "Last Call". You may also be interested in this 2014 Tricycle interview with Ittetsu Nemoto.

This is a very good movie. It does not emphasize the teamwork that does or should go into addressing such a serious matter. It worries me that one watching this documentary may not be enlightened to all the modalities available.

I have not seen the film yet, but it all became a bit more real for me after my wife received a call Friday night that her cousin had commited suicide. We all know she was suffering from a lot of physical and psychological pain, but suicide is something I cannot wrap my head around. Maybe watching this movie will help me understand.

The scary part is you can’t see how bad someone’s mental pain is from the outside, unless you are a professional trained to know the signs, but maybe not even then? Sending Metta and sitting for all those suffering. I will also try extra hard to remember that many of the people I interact with every day could be suffering way more than anyone can see.

This is true. I had been thinking about the immense pressure on Nemoto as he spoke to the people who reach out to him for help. I can't imagine the pressure to say the right thing as these people grapple with whether they want to live or not.

But then, tonight I was thinking, how is this really different from any conversation we may have? We don't know where peoples' hearts are. We don't know what they are struggling with. Neither to they know our own struggles. So the need to be attentive and consider our words in any conversation is potentially no different then the heightened situations Nemoto finds himself in.

    Hi all,

I have been searching for a site to download or rent, but unfortunately it is not available in Europe... Unless I look in the wrong places. Amazon and iTunes do not have it in Europe
Does anybody know of an other way?
