Just dropped Jundo off at his sister's house. Strange how we could have been together less than 48 hours, feel like we were together for a week, yet still feel too short.

Sat with some of this mornings practice and watched the Oryoki, which I loved and am very grateful to have seen in this lovely warm, informal family and friends context, it really made it accessible. Deep bow to Myogen for hosting, deep bows to everyone for sharing with us.

Much thanks to Myogan, a gracious host and friend, and to Shugen and Shokai for the long drives down and up to gather together.

In case anyone is wondering, in the picture above, I am wearing a genuine Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri "Funny Hair Hat", mine featuring the Canadian flag, a gift from Shokai. Every man should have one.

Today in Chicago, looking forward to my talk at Taigen Leighton't place tomorrow. Maybe I should wear the hat.

We will drive to Omaha from the Sioux Falls area, my wife driver--I don't drive--to meet with Tom, Matt, Jundo and the two of us. My wife will drive to a local library or park for Poky Mon Go, while the rest of us will sit in Zazenkai on the 3rd of August, day after tomorrow; we will drive tomorrow to a motel, and meet with all at Matt's home on Wednesday. I hope to watch Oryoki, with Jundo's permission. I have been able to extend my sitting time to upwards an hour, so participation will be fully possible. We will only be able to stay until about 2:00 PM because my wife needs light for driving. We plan a most enjoyable time--very much looking forward because I may never again be able to meet this crew in person.

After much negotiation with my school and my teacher for tonight's class, I'm afraid I'm unable to reschedule the exam I have to take tonight, so I won't be able to make the talk at Ancient Dragon Zen Gate. I'm trying to look at this as encouragement to get to Japan in the next year, or so, so I can meet and sit with Jundo.

I also want to thank Matt, Chris and their daughter for such a lovely, brief time together. To Tai Shi and his wife, for making a long long drive to be there, and for just being who they are. And to Tom, for the most powerful Heart Sutra recitation we have ever had here at Treeleaf. Chris is simply the coolest Methodist minister I have ever met, right down to the nose pierce. Chuck and Tom are golden hearted, and ... it was lovely.

When one travels, it is as one meeting old old friends who I know so well, yet for the first time too.
