Hey all
A slightly different metta post from me today, but it will need to be a bit longer. I spent three nights at work, with overnight call outs meaning I only had eight hours sleep in three days - more grist for the mill of bodhisattva practice though by the third night I didn't feel much like a bodhisattva, more like an incarnation of Mara!!! Nonetheless, some zazen then sitting in the garden with the morning sun and sewing the kesa for an hour helped restore equanimity, along with reciting the metta verses, I just changed one line - not for 'a' difficult person, but for 'all' the difficult people I had met in the previous few days, of which there were many.
I tell you, some may think that crisis mental health work is somehow 'nice' because you are helping others, but we get so much abuse, threats on our lives, even physical assaults once in a while, and (of course) we are challenging people's very notion of themselves at times (which most people don't like), that it honestly pushes me out of the zone of compassion and empathy at times. Like two days ago, I sat with a young woman who had much to be thankful for in life, but it wasn't enough, she was like a hungry ghost - and she had been having an affair to try and fill that hole, yet you could see, even then, it wasn't enough. So she thought she might be better off dead than alive. I struggled to feel sympathy for her, I'll be honest, self-pity is a cruel and offensive animal. I tell you, despite how hard this job can be, and how much it sometimes makes me doubt myself, it is a powerful education in the potential depths of delusion, and the overwhelming cravings that grip people, sending their moral compass spinning and leaving them at the mercy of their desires (no wonder the Four Truths caught on!)
I sewed all of this into my kesa and as I did, I felt an empathetic connection to all those 'other's', for I too am a deluded being, deluded also in seeing them as 'others.' But I am absolutely blessed to have discovered and remained on the Buddha's path - not always straight - but even when I have gone off course I knew the path was there, I just needed to find my way back. I am ever thankful for the insight and wisdom of this path, and the meaning of sewing the Buddha's robe is something I sometimes do not wish to express in words, letting it, instead, flow as the blood in my veins. As I sat there, the words of the metta verses were like stitches in my kesa, and I as continued to recite the metta verses, I just kept going, for each new person or situation that came into my mind. So much sadness and suffering in the world, yet the beauty of the fact that we wish it were not so, and that we practice to realise that, in any way we can, even by healing our own hearts first.
Metta to all beings throughout space and time, may they enjoy peace, love, joy, and serenity

I would also like to ask for Metta for all Israelis and Palestinians today, as violence escalates, may there (someday, somehow) finally be peace there and might all live together in peace ...

I do not recall Rev Saido, but I must have met him as I was a member of the OBC Sangha as I lived in Reading where they have a priory, well I'm actually from Reading. I stayed a number of times at Throssel Hole, so no doubt we crossed paths. I am sure he will be missed by many. Metta to those affected by his passing.
