New Years Greetings from Treeleaf, Japan 2015

The year has passed here in Tsukuba! A New Years tradition at Buddhist temples across Japan is the ringing of the Joya-no-kane (除夜の鐘) ...

... the temple bell near midnight. The bell is typically rung 108 times (sometimes by the temple priests, sometimes by parishioners) to cleanse the listener of the 108 mortal afflictions (bonno ... anger, greed, ignorance, envy, hatred, arrogance and the rest) that, in traditional Buddhist thinking, are the causes of suffering. By ringing out the old year and ringing in the new, each earthly desire will be taken away and therefore we can start the New Year with a pure mind.

From where does that sound come? To where does it go?

Perhaps we might also say that past moments ... the up and downs, happiness and sadness ... are now gone, and a new beginning rings out ... ever new and renewing.

Master Dogen wrote, "Zazen ... is like the hammer striking emptiness, the bell's melodious sound continues to resonate as it echoes, endlessly before and after. It is not limited to this moment ."

    HAPPY NEW EVERY-MOMENT, EVERY-ONE!

Joya-no-kane atmosphere at a temple in Tokyo ...

I tried that with firecrackers some years ago.

I'm very grateful to have found you, and to practice with you.

Zazen is lighter on the eardrums and my neighbours seem to prefer it.

Wishing you and everyone the best.

Jundo is like John Connor and speaks from the future!
Or he's like Star Trek IV, "Voyage Home", which was translated as "Zurück in die Gegenwart" [Back to the Present] as the German movie title.
So now, welcome to the present Present which is our Home!
    Happy new Present 2015!

Hi Danny, I used to study german for a couple of years. I always liked it.
I used to think it was because I love Die Toten Hosen, but I like German culture since I was a teen, with no logical explanation.
Many years after that, well into my 30's I knew I was adopted as a baby, and my biological mom was a german student or from a german (or at least german speaking) family who could not raise me and decided to give me away.
I cannot accurately describe the feeling I had when I was sent to Frankfurt Am Main for a work training.
When I landed there I felt home as never before, can not describe the feeling.
It lasted only 6 days, and I don't know when, but I'm sure I'll visit Germany again before I die.

Gassho (and sorry for the rant)
    Walter.

Best wishes for a wonderful New Year to Jundo and all at Treeleaf. This week has been a particularly sobering time here in Indonesia, with the Air Asia tragedy affecting so many and so starkly highlighting the impermanence of things. Much metta to all.

Bryson, that is indeed no way anyone would want to begin another year. So sorry for everyone affected by the Air Asia tragedy.

    Hi Walter,
thank you for sharing your story. (This was not a rant. A rant is when you speak in anger or frustration about something.) I had wondered why you are called Walter, but there are many families with German roots in Argentina, correct? Maybe it is not so uncommon?
I hope you can visit Germany again one day.

    Thank you Nindo.
I misused the term rant, I meant the idle talk instead.
My family had not german ancestors, but italian, lebanese and argentinian ones.
I was called Walter after my dad's best friend.
At least that's what I were told when I asked.
It's not an uncommon name here, but neither very common like Pablo or Diego.

    Gassho,
    Walter.

Being an adopted child leaves many questions, much metta.
I hope you can visit again!
