    Here's a challenge....something for my Birthday

    Hi everyone,

I hit the big Five Oh (No) on Monday - I understand my gorgeous wife is going to buy me a Kindle Paperwhite. Yay!!!

Which one book would you recommend to a seasoned Buddhist, but Zen newbie like me....one that will go some way towards me putting it down with a smug grin ("Now I get it" grin ) and a feeling of being inspired to continue being a Zennie!

    No pressure...!

P.s. Doesn't have to be a Kindle book

Perhaps not a traditional 'Zen' book, but I greatly enjoyed The Man Who Folded Himself by David Gerrold. It's not without its flaws, but it explores a variety of interesting themes in a sort of external manifestation of introspection. For the most part, the book only has a single character, but the character explores a wide range of experience.

I actually don't recommend that book so much, for reasons I will leave for another time.

I would pick ... Okumura's "Realizing Genjokoan: The Key to Dogen's Shobogenzo" and "Living By Vow",

... if one has already read Uchiyama's "Opening the Hand of Thought".

Two things. First, go for the Kindle Voyage; it's just out, and it's a bit better than the Paperwhite.

As for a book: get the Shobogenzo:

I have it on mine, and read a chapter every now and then. It's much easier to approach it that way than in the enormous dead-tree version.

Oh well. I've got the Voyage coming next week (it's just released here in the UK next week). It happens to be my birthday this week as well, so it's sort of for that.

In any case, the Shobogenzo is a good choice. I find that the bigger the book, the better it is to get a Kindle version. I'm currently reading a 900+ page book about the Civil War on my Kindle; reading it in dead-tree format is too annoying, because it's big and heavy, and the fonts are small.

    LOL

I have a tendency to do things backwards because I am a knuckle head. I wish I had read "The Heart Sutra by Red Pine" before all the other stuff.

Red Pine and Uchiyama are my "stranded on a desert island" books. But Hubert Benoit is a must for me.
    Happy 50. 50 to go.

Yes, but around here we have "non-Birthdays", because we don't quite fully believe in passing time.

one of the things I enjoy most about my Kindle paperwhite is the ability to email pdfs to it. articles, essays, etc., I find online (for free) are easily converted and sent to my library for later perusal.
