    Heron encounter

    Hello,

I spotted a BIG heron in our tiny garden today before sitting Zazen....we have a really small puddle/pond with some fish in it...well, maybe not anymore

    Morning mist heron,
gliding through the break of dawn,
    the birds are awake.

    Hi Hans

Herons are amazing looking birds. So majestic. There was one that would stand in the same place on the Limmat in Zürich, seemingly unfazed by the bustle of the city going on around it..

I love this verse of Dogen's:

    A snowy heron
    on the snowfield
    where winter grass is unseen
    hides itself
    in its own figure.

    Hello,

thank you for your comments. It feels almost silly, but seeing this bird touched me deeply. We as humans try so hard to create things to fit limited notions of beauty and power....and then there it is, the real dragon in heron form visiting me before my Zazen. Of course, every moment is nothing other than the heron of awakened nature spreading its wings in countless ways, but to announce itself so beautifully is precious nevertheless.

    Nothing Lacking.

And no, I will not try to hold on to the heron. If my sentimentality creates too many fetters, his wings will be bound...and free flight becomes suffering.

    Hans,

I think it is wonderful that nature can touch us so deeply. And you are right that the real heron is so much more powerful than the idea.
