Anxious about work
I vow with all beings
to ponder my relative size
amongst the falling stars of Leonid
Absorbed in my work
I vow with all beings
to lose myself completely
or not at all
Vowing to leave home
I vow with all beings
to study deeply
all the ways to let go
Emptying trashcans
I vow with all beings
to note how every item
was vital once
Entering training
I vow with all beings
to remember that the clearest view
comes from the lowest vantage point
Preparing for a run
I vow with all beings
not to over exaggerate
despite this breathing, I am still alive
Telling a bedtime story
I vow with all beings
to listen for the messages
in the void
Expressing gratitude
I vow with all beings
to thank buttons
and nettles and sandwiches
Mindful of spending
I vow with all beings
to place coins
in the hands of the hungry
Hanging Christmas lights
I vow with all beings
to balance, balance
one misstep and gravity wins
Approaching Rohatsu
I vow with all beings
my sweatshirt a monk's robe,
any seat a mountain
Planning a trip
I vow with all beings
to pierce the concepts
of space, time and movement
Shinkai,
I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for all the Gathas. (This goes to everyone that contributed to this thread)
Ron
Fighting anger
I vow with all beings
to feel fully
but act carefully
Counting my mala
I vow with all beings
to find the 108 ways
to be enlightened by the 10,000 things
At the end of Ango
I vow with all beings
to meet the new person
who comes out the other side
As today marks my 90th Gatha and the completion of my commitment to write one every single day during Ango, I want to express my sincere gratitude for your kind words and encouragement all the way through.
Gassho and thank you for being here.
No Shinkai...thank you. :)Quote:

Dear Shinkai,
Your stuff is really inspiring. Very humbling.
Allow me to share a few words from last retreat:
my mantra, just being
my deity, the ordinary
my practice, wonder

Thank you for posting it Taigu. It wise very mind opening to hear it during our retreat and I was going to ask you to write it down for all of us :)
And thank you Shinkai for all those gathas. They are wonderful. A pity I didn't find this thread before...

I have been reading Dhammapada and came across the following, which made me think of this thread:
"Even though a Gatha be a thousand of words, but made up of senseless words, one word of a Gatha is better, which if a man hears, he becomes quiet."
And
"Though a man recite a hundred gathas made up of senseless words, one word of the law is better, which if a man hears, he becomes quiet."
So this made me wonder ... what if you hear a hundred gathas of a thousand words and become quiet...as I've done here.
Thank you for this thread...

wow, these are great. I've never tried to write gatha before.
This one came the mind as I read:
Cheeks burning from hasty words
I vow with all beings
to remember that those who challenge us most
are our greatest teachers
Great start and very apt, especially for those of us with kids. ;)Quote:

Thank you, Dadio. As someone who spends too much time in his head, this is a welcome reminder.Quote:

Facing disappointment
I vow with all beings
to acknowledge that priests are made,
not chosen
Being sick for a week
I vow with all beings
To sit with what is
and fan the air around myself

In the face of loss
I vow with all beings
to hold the hands of those around me
and listen
For my wife's grandmother and best friend who passed away. Final funeral services today. A wave in the ocean.

Metta to you and your family Daido.
Daido,
Much metta to you and your family...and to all those feeling the waves of the ocean. May they all feel safe and still.

I don't know if this is the right place to post, but, as I'm having some problems with my back and overall health, I created some gathas to remind me to act healthily towards my body and mind. I really hope those who like the idea can use them or be inspired by the idea to make some better ones.
This is one for posture:
When I realize that my posture is unhealthy
I vow with all beings
To maintain the correct posture
Reminding me of the Tathagata’s body
This one is for remembering not to eat unhealthy food:
When I’m about to eat unhealthy food
I vow with all beings
To eat pure and healthily
Reminding me of the Tathagata’s body
And this is a generic one, for any unhealthy acts we tend to do:
When I’m about to act unhealthily
I vow with all beings
To act pure and healthily
Reminding me of the Tathagata’s body
