Hi,

We've had many storms recently. One morning when things were clear I walked to the lake very early. It was quite wonderful. The park, usually filled with folks, was empty. As I took photos of the sunrise, I noticed a figure gliding through the still waters. It moved toward a reflection of the sun. I was so overwhelmed with the solemnity of the moment it was difficult to concentrate on the mechanics of taking photos. I had no idea what the critter was, but a wildlife enthusiast friend later identified it as a nutrient rat. The name didn't matter, it was just beautiful lines, contrast, and smooth movement. I found myself wanting to hold on to the moment. Of course it was over quickly. Nice metaphor.

I know! I have a tiny cabin by Ruidoso, New Mexico and there are lots of deer around here but now I just found out that there are about 14 wild horses that come to visit frequently. The neighbor encourages it by leaving water out for them. :)

Last year, I introduced some small local biotope fishes into my garden pond.

I'd like to explore the U.S. landscape more, especially the desert southwest. North of the border I've painted east and west and even though it is impossible to have a favorite place two have always come to mind.

Southern Alberta.. where the prairies meet the mountains. just for sheer scale of transition and the play of light.

...and Killarney provincial park in Ontario. This area ,the La Cloche range, was made a park through the activism of artists "the group of seven" in the early 20th century.

....and BTW one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to is Cumbria. For our honeymoon we walked from Ennerdale to Troutbeck in the lakes. Wow. No pictures though.

Coffee at Matsumoto Joe's in Bar Harbor (only scoundrels and itinerant Zen priests hang out there this time of year) with my son - our Yakuza faces. He is also my student in Uechi ryu and has asked to "apprentice" in zen with me. I hope one day he will be my lineage holder in at least one of these. It is always the hope of the teacher that their students surpass them. My son is already teaching me. I am honored to practice (and joke around) with him.
