Just Sitting, Thinking-Not Thinking ... is the silence always heard in noise and silence, the stillness that is both movement and standing still ... the peace encountered even as disturbance ...

... ... ... the full, vibrant life ... ... ...

Thank you, Jundo. This talk really hits home with me today as I am snowed-in
at my parents house (they have gas in case the power goes out) and my wife
is stuck at work (nurse) til all this melts. Personalities are beginning to rub
together and start a little fire. I got on the computer to get a moment away
from all that, and found this wonderful talk. Emptiness...in snow...in sun...
in noise...in silence...I go now to bow to a buddha made of snow...moment
by moment, he too is melting into nothingness, emptiness.

Hello all,

Aahhh, silence amidst the noise of a 6th grade classroom...it is a beautiful thing. Thank you for this Jundo. Such a simple message, yet sometimes it is so difficult to remember.

Love it... great talk. Reminds me of a parable, I can't remember the origin:

A man can't stand the noise of the city, the cars, the people, the machinery. He just wants to find some serenity. So he moves to the country. But soon, the sound of roosters and the cows, and the coyotes and the owls, get to him. So he finally abandons the country, moving into a cave in a remote mountain region. "Finally, peace and quiet!" he thinks. But soon, he's driven mad by the sound of dripping water in the cave...

All of which is to say, the only real serenity is right where you are. As Robert Persig said, "The only Zen you find on the tops of mountains is the Zen you bring up there."

Many thanks,
Matt

This is the reason that we all do this kind of "sitting in a quiet room" every couple of weeks or so ...

A quick quote from this talk...

"So, for that reason, I hope everyone will sit, once in awhile, in a truly disturbing, disagreeable, ugly, noisy, smelly, busy, and distracting place. In a stinking garbage dump, next to a construction site with jackhammers pounding, at an Ozzy Osbourne concert, in a game room, while crushed in a crowded city bus or parked in a parking lot off a busy highway."

Sensei, you have just described my head!

I do love Ozzy though. Buddhozzy.

What a powerful illustration of the virtues of this online sangha... the echoes and imprints of all the voices here resonate for everyone to know... the members past, present and future, "just here, just now, just this." Transcending time and space. [gassholook]

This talk really resonates with me. One of the many things that drew me to Zen practise is the hope of finding a little bit of silence in the day but as I've been practising I've observed that there is a silence and stillness even within the noise and activity of everyday life.
