http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kT9yRiEqelE/R7H6sYoCA-I/AAAAAAAADBk/_6Q0ceNjxEA/s320/free%2Bthings.jpg I hear from folks every day touched by the bad economy ... jobs lost, houses foreclosed, marriages under stress, people in crisis. These are hard times for so many.

Over the coming weeks, I will offer a series of talks on what Buddhism has to teach about the economics of "hard times". Some of it will cover big topics that impact the whole system, with our consumerism, materialism and wasted resources. The future is at stake! But some of it is small, and right at home.

Today, we will start with a really simple lesson. In fact, it is so true, so wise, so often said ... that it sounds like a greeting card, a bumper sticker, a fortune cookie. But it is TRUE AS TRUE CAN BE:

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE --ARE-- FREE!

When the bank's repossessing the car, when hopes and dreams go up in smoke, when we have a leaky roof over our head on a rainy day, it good to appreciate the rain!

Today’s Sit-A-Long video follows at this link. Remember: recording ends soon after the beginning bells; a sitting time of 20 to 35 minutes is recommended.

Thank you Jundo-oso;
And yes, your teaching of the best things .... is absolutely true. This past weekend we had a visit from long time friends, a young medical student from Hiroshima; now a doctor with his young family. Although, we like most others, are stretched to the limit, we had such a wonderful time of just catching up and hanging out together. Sometimes , when we allow ourselves to get hung up on the routine of life, we forget to be mindful of others and enjoy the dance ( as a friend once said :-) )

gassho and thanks again, Richard

No kidding, this is a good one. I get depressed at times because my freelance income has gone to crap this year, and my household is considered "low income." However, my husband and I have zero credit card debt, the car is paid off, and we have an affordable mortgage. Even in good times, everything else is GRAVY!

Hm . . . think I'll get off the internet now and spend some time in the yard with all its autumn colors . . .
