http://ih0.redbubble.net/image.14518203.8847/papergc,441x415,w,ffffff.2u1.jpgAs the medicine for our self’s dissatisfied, anxious, disappointed, searching, frustrated suffering dis-ease (Dukkha), the “Fourth Noble Truth”‘ prescribes “The Noble Eightfold Path.”
Although the path is numbered sequentially, it is generally not seen as as series of steps, but instead (in modern terms) a “holistic lifestyle” which is to be developed more or less simultaneously, all linked together and each helping the cultivation of the others and, in turn, helped by the others. For that reason, it is represented as the eight spokes of the Dharma Wheel, each supporting the entirety.
In the Zen schools, Zazen is valued as key, nurturing all of the path … yet all the spokes, in turn, nurture Zazen.
The eight elements are typically divided into three groups… and we’ll talk about each of these elements over the coming days.
Wisdom (Sanskrit: prajña)
1. Right View
2. Right Intention
Ethical Conduct (Sanskrit: sila)
3. Right Speech
4. Right Action
5. Right Livelihood
Mental Discipline (Sanskrit: samadhi)
6. Right Effort
7. Right Mindfulness
8. Right Concentration

Yes indeed, very easy to follow, and they are worth going over more than one time, since they are the foundations of our practice. :encouragement:

When the eight elements are the spokes of the wheel, zazen is the hub, isn’t it?

Thank you for these Jundo. One can read about the basics, but having an introduction like this from a teacher is invaluable.

Thank you Jundo, wonderful to get back to the basics sometimes! Instead of the Wheel of Dharma I'd like to see a Pianica of Dharma sometimes too.

The 8 fold path is the key to so many important Zen practices I like how it's explained as a musical scale. Each path is individually important, but when combined they are even better. Looking at the path as a lifestyle makes it more than just something that is stopped and started

In Nishijima/Cross Shobogenzo, the excerpt in Maka-Hannya-Haramiysu, it reads
Prajna, or real wisdom, is a kind of intuitive ability that occurs in our body and mind, when our body and mind are in the state of balance and harmony.
I also see prajna is the first two “spokes” of View and Intention.
Is prajna on its own different than maha-prajna? As in great wisdom is body and mind, wisdom is view and intention?

I believe that prajna (Wisdom) and maha-prajna (Great Wisdom) are one and the same. Some other schools of Buddhism might quibble about word definitions, but for us Zen folks ... Wisdom is just Wisdom ...

Thank you, Jundo. Since posting my question, I've been glancing over some discourses on Wisdom and I see many mentions of it being used both ways as well.
Today has been a lesson on language and navigating translations
