Introduction - Steve

Greetings to all!

I am new to Treeleaf, and new to the practice. I have spent some time over the last few days looking in on your sangha through the forum and would like to ask for the opportunity to listen and participate.

I am 36, married with one son (Owen, 3 yrs old) and I live in central Ontario, Canada. I have not found a local sangha, so my exposure to zen has been limited to books and audio lectures.

Until recently, I would have called myself an athiest, but I have been on a restless search for something. While I am uncomfortable with the Roman Catholic tradition that I grew up knowing, I also recognized that pure athiesm did not provide any focus either. (See Richard Dawkins – a wonderful contributor to the science of sociobiology, but The God Delusion struck me as an angry and unreasonable rant.)

I have had an interest in mythology and comaparative religion since stumbling on Joseph Campbell. I enjoy the stories and meaning behind many of the world's belief systems, but I can not reconcile the ideas of otherworldly beings and existences with my deep seated intuition that here and now is all there is. This past spring, I took notice of Zen.

P.S. I saw the discussion on what music do you listen to. Belle and Sebastian is never far from my player. Other music that sees time on the playlist: Tegan and Sara, the Jam, the Fratellis, the New Pornographers, the Rheostatics, Simon and Garfunkel, Sister Vanilla, Cinerama, the Specials, and with the snow starting to come down...nothing beats the introspection of Leonard Cohen.

Nice music selection. Have you heard Leonard Cohen's version of The Jungle Line by Joni Mitchell? It's on Herbie Hancock's new CD called The Joni Letters. I really dig it. I wish I had a voice like Cohen's but I suppose I would have to smoke and abuse myself the way he did for years to sound like that (plus he's in his seventies).

Since Dawkins was brought up. I've watched a couple of his lectures but don't feel any real need to read the book.

I do think his idea of memes is very applicable to Buddhism.

Bill: I've not heard that track, but I will look it up. I agree with Will...If you can't commit to a long diet of whiskey and cigarettes, a good MIDI mixer is the other option.

Walker: Rush and Neil Young are always welcome here. I don't have any Arcade Fire, but like the tracks I hear on the radio.

Martin and Rev: I have a great deal of respect for R. Dawkins, particularly for his contributions in evolutionary psychology. I just think that he spends too much text attempting to ridicule religious feeling, which muddles the point he is trying to achieve. It was an interesting read, more so because while I read it, I began to think that my public stance on religion was a bit...arrogant. I removed my "Darwin Fish" from my car's bumper. :wink:

I'd recommend replacing it with a bumper sticker that says "Buddhism: the religion that promises nothing, and delivers." ;)

I don't find that a Darwin fish is arrogant. Moving all the Bibles in the library to the fiction section...well that's another story.
