The time has again arrived for our annual

JUKAI CEREMONY at Treeleaf Sangha

... to commence Sunday, January 15th at Midnight (Sunday-Monday) Japan time (that is New York 10am, Los Angeles 7am (Sunday morning), London 3pm and Paris 4pm (Sunday afternoon)) (Aussie-Zealanders ... you figure it out! ;)). The ceremony will last about 1 hour, and will be visible from that time at the screen below:

https://youtu.be/gStaTKzFmw8

Our 22 Preceptees come together simultaneously from 9 countries (from Russia, Brazil, England, Canada, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, USA and Japan ... plus several other folks undertaking Jukai with us for the second or more times) joining in this Jukai as one, after having spent several months preparing for this day, studying the Precepts, sewing a rakusu, weighing the place of the Buddhist Teachings in their life. As with everything at Treeleaf, all was accomplished fully online, and invite all our Sangha to the celebration. Jundo Cohen is the Preceptor.

Jukai literally means to receive or to undertake the Precepts. It is the ceremony both of one’s formally committing to the Buddhist Sangha and to the Practice of Zen Buddhism, and of one’s undertaking the “Sixteen Mahayana Bodhisattva Precepts” as guides for life. Traditionally for Jukai, one receives from a teacher the Rakusu, which represents the robe of the Buddha, the Kechimyaku, a written lineage chart connecting the recipient to the Buddhas and Ancestors of the past, and a “Dharma name” selected by the teacher and representing qualities of the recipient’s personality and practice.

My teacher, Nishijima Roshi, wrote this:

When a Buddhist seeks to commence upon the study of Buddhism, there is first a ceremony which should be undertaken: It is called “Jukai,” the “Receipt of the Precepts,” the ceremony in which one receives and undertakes the Precepts as a disciple of the Buddha… Master Dogen specifically left us a chapter entitled ‘”Jukai,” in which it is strongly emphasized that, when the Buddhist believer first sets out to commence Buddhist practice… be it monk, be it lay person, no matter… the initial needed steps include the holding of the ceremony of Jukai and the undertaking of the Precepts… The rationale of all of the Buddhist Precepts, the Mahayana Boddhisattva Precepts ... is as a pointing toward the best ways for us to live in this life, in this real world… how to live benefiting both ourselves and others as best we can.

WELCOME!

It is an honor to experience this moment with you.

Hi all

I will be missing this as will be 4am NZ time and I've got a heavy schedule both behind and in front of me, so I'll renew myself by youtube later in the day.
To the first time jukai-ees, my congratulations to you, enjoy the moment.

Thank you to all who facilitated Jukai, presided over it, were its hands and eyes and hearts. And to my fellow jukaiees, it was a privilege to take the precepts with you. I really enjoyed hearing our rather ragged chorus of "Yes, I will" - it truly brought home that we were all together in one place in our own places and countries.
I found it to be deeply meaningful and moving, but also joyous and fun (and funny). I'm already looking forward to watching Sangha friends take jukai next year. For now, I shall commence sewing my rakusu case.

The ceremony was fantastic and it was great to feel the connections to so many other members of the Sangha.

I have to say that it was really easy to forget that we were all scattered far and wide and it made taking the precepts and receiving rakusu all the more special...

I've had to refer back to kotei's very helpful instruction for how to wear the rakusu though this morning, it turns out that it's not as easy to prostrate and keep my rakusu off the floor as I thought it would be! Some practice is required [emoji38]

Deep gratitude to Jundo and to everyone in the Sangha for making this possible and for offering so much advice and support along the way.

Gratefully on January 10, 2016 I undertook the Precepts, my rakusu gift of the Sangha because of arthritis and my wife sewed my cover to pattern in one afternoon and one evening: this from scraps from her sewing basket, black brocade with beautifully plain deep gray-green rakusu I humbally now renewed, looked on appropriately for a man 71. I dedicated to helping as Ubasoku and I am grandmotherly for all. I ask you if you like to contribute to our several Poetry threads. My favorite which I started years ago a thread Big and Little poetry--any verse. The caps my way to encourage you. We write short or long any type with some or no great effort, my gratitude as I read every poem with joy, so you may compose . This is a Buddhist Sangha. No one is good or bad. Try, also our Haiku thread and two Poetry threads that I know of. Actually our skill at keeping entries we see other places three or so lines. I often do just that. I encourage any length of poetry and to write love I studied above my abilities. Never be afraid of trying your writing my friends. I am excited for you. Jundo, please excuse. I encourage others to write here. Tai Shi meaning calm poetry which has become more and more calm as I write now for my Sangha, Treeleaf. Truly all the world is our temple.

Thank you to Jundo and all that helped to facilitate the ceremony! I found it profound and quite moving (Even with the flu [morehappy]). I came to Treeleaf by way of my Buddhist philosophy instructor at University. The one thing I remember him telling me was that he had heard that the Jukai ceremony at Treeleaf was deeply meaningful. He was correct! Thank you also to all my fellow jukaiees, I greatly enjoyed going through this with you all.

Good morning Jundo,

I know you asked some of us to share our Jukai experiences along the way up to and once Jukai was completed, and perhaps some experiences directly after. I was thinking of may be sharing mine. Is the forum you would like us to share these experiences this forum or a different forum?

It was an honor to go through Jukai with all of you. I had wanted to do it years ago, but didn't take the opportunity. After becoming housebound due to illness I thought that it would never happen (which I was ok with, as well) until I found TreeLeaf. It has been great wearing the rakusu during zazen all week. Very meaningful. Thanks again for the opportunity to practice with y'all.
