Dear Ino, taking it to the next level!

Our Monthly 4-Hour Zazenkai has the following main differences from the Weekly 90-Minute Zazenkai:

The Heart Sutra is in Japanese, Hannya Shingyo

Recital of the Identity of Relative and Absolute (Sandokai) in English, with its particular melody

3 Bells between Hannya Shingyo and Sandokai accompanying the movements of the Doshi to the Altar

Slight difference in the Eko Recital to mention the Sandokai

Verses to Open and Close the Sutras

Metta Verses

The Kirigami is as follows:

MONTHLY ZAZENKAI CEREMONY:

Begins with a series of rings of the small Inkin bell ••••••• followed by 3x PROSTRATIONS by EVERYONE

Then:

PING PING PING, TAMP and immediate CONK on MOKUGYO once.

INO ONLY:

[i]The Identity of Relative and Absolute
(Sandokai)

EVERYONE:

The mind of the Great Sage of India

Is intimately conveyed west and east.

While human faculties are both wise or dull

In the Way there are no northern or southern ancestors.

The subtle Source shines clear in the light;

The branching streams flow in the dark.

To be attached to things is primordial illusion;

To encounter the absolute is not yet enlightenment.

* All spheres, every sense and field

intermingle even as they shine alone,

Interacting even as they merge,

Yet keeping their places in expressions of their own.

Sights differ primarily in shape and character

And sounds in harsh or soothing tones.

The dark makes all words one;

The brightness distinguishes good and bad phrases.

The four elements return to their true nature

As a child turns to its mother.

Fire is hot, water is wet,

Wind moves and the earth is dense.

Eye and form, ear and sound, nose and smell,

Tongue and taste, the sweet and sour:

Each independent of the other

Like leaves that come from the same root.

And though leaves and root must go back to the Source

Both root and leaves have their own uses.

Light is also darkness,

But do not think of it as darkness.

Darkness is light;

Do not see it as light.

Light and darkness are not one, not two

Like the foot before and the foot behind in walking.

* Each thing has its own being

Which is not different from its place and function.

The relative fits the absolute

As a box and its lid.

The absolute meets the relative

Like two arrow points that touch in mid air.

* Hearing this, simply perceive what is,

Make no criterion.

If you do not see the Way,

You do not see it even as you walk upon it.

Walking forward in the way

You draw no nearer, progress no farther.

One who fails to see this truth

Is mountains and rivers away.

* Listen, those who would percieve this subtle matter:

* Live well your time by night and day!

FOLLOWED BY A DEDICATION - READ BY INO ONLY:

Buddha Nature pervades the whole universe, Reality, existing right here now:
In reciting THE HEART OF THE PERFECTION OF GREAT WISDOM SUTRA and THE IDENTITY OF RELATIVE AND ABSOLUTE, we dedicate our sincere efforts to:

Remainder is the same as Weekly Zazenkai.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* * * TAMP:
Sutra Opening Verse
(Kaikyôge)
(To be chanted 3X before Dharma Talk)
The Dharma, incomparably profound and infinitely subtle,
Is always encountered, yet rarely perceived.
Now we see, hear, receive and maintain this,
May we all realize the Tathagatha's true meaning. (* before 3rd verse)
* The Verse to Close the Sutras
May the merit of this Practice penetrate to each thing in all places, so that we and all sentient beings realize the Buddha way together. ...
All Buddhas throughout space and time, all Bodhisattvas, Mahasattvas, Maha * Prajna * Paramita
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

At the end of the Zazenkai, we recite the following all together:

VERSE OF ATONEMENT:

All harmful acts, words and thoughts, ever committed by me since of old,

On account of beginningless greed, anger and ignorance,

Born of my body, mouth and mind,

Now I atone for them all

FOUR VOWS (to be recited 3x , vibrant on the second, soft on the third time):

To save all sentient beings, though beings numberless

To transform all delusions, though delusions inexhaustible

To perceive Reality, though Reality is boundless

To attain the Enlightened Way, a Way non-attainable

Just for reference, the melody for the Sandokai (Identity of Relative and Absolute) in English which we chant was developed by the great Bernie Glassman Roshi of the White Plum, loosely inspired by the first few opening bars of Fiddler on the Roof! [smile]

I understand that he wished to have something more appropriate to the cadence of English than the traditional Japanese style, heard in the first few minutes here, rather tricky to chant, and to match with the English wording and syllable breaks:

Ugh, I rushed you right before Sandōkai. I am sorry… I started to suspect the three bells were supposed to follow your movements too late. [emoji1374]

Oh, you were very good today! Lovely Debut at Carnegie Hall.

Yes, follow the Doshi's movements to the Altar (while the Doshi is also following the Doan to stay together) ...

I am also trying to walk back slowly while opening my Zagu before 3 Prostrations so that I arrive in position, and have Zagu opened, by the time the Doan signals 1st Prostration. However, the Doan should not start the 1st Prostration until the Doshi is ready. (You were fine today, by the way, so no problem here today)

I just went through your pronunciation of the Hannya Shingyo, and it was excellent. I have nothing to correct (very rarely has that happened to a new chanter.) It is probably due to a combination of your musical ear, that you are multi-lingual, plus that fact that Spanish speakers tend to do very well with Japanese pronunciation as the two languages are close in pronunciation by chance. Lovely! It is okay that you lost your place for a moment, and I like that you did not stop. (What an Ino would actually do is "jump ahead" for the missed places if chanting with a group, but you were solo, so it was fine).

The only other thing to point out is the WACK on the Mokugyo immediately right after the ping ping ping TAMP on the bell, but before "MAKA HANNYA ... " name of the Sutra.

Wonderful debut. YOU ARE HIRED! [monk]

So what happened with the Heart Sutra ( which I actually know by heart in Japanese) is that I was making sure I followed it on the iPad and the moment I stopped was because I couldn’t get the page to change! [emoji1787]
I messed up last week with the bell roll before the prostrations, but paid close attention to you this time around. If you allow me to do it again sometime, I will fix the Sandokai part as well.
Thank you for the compliment on the Japanese pronunciation! I am happy I was helpful, rather than a distraction!
I am confused about your mokugyo whack comment. I definitely did the mokugyo hit right after chanting the title MAKA HANNYA HARAMITA SHINGYO and the single bell hit .. emoji1] Is it meant to be somewhere else?!
Thanks a lot Jundo. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn and I could not be more grateful! [emoji2309] [emoji2309] [emoji2309]
