Some of the musical instruments of Zen ...

... including the Ho ...

The big drum and big bell are often struck in a particular manner to mark the hour. Some temples in China automated. (I think it it signaling 2pm the traditional way, 2 drum strikes followed by the one bell strike). Like church bells in Europe, the temple served as the town clock.

Another kind of music that is very popular in Japanese Buddhism, and I did not mention, is Baika, Plum Blossom Songs, a kind of Buddhist hymn singing. My Dharma Grandpa, Renpo Niwa Zenji, was a big supporter of Baika. Many Japanese Soto Zen temples have groups of parishioners who gather in a chorus to sing Baika. Here is a Soto priest performing Baika ...

Thank you for the lovely zazenkai. The Dylan touch and the talk of bells reminded me of the Dylan song "Ring Them Bells." (Although that song seems more suited to a church service!).

It is a Bacchus, a Japanese brand Fender copy made in China.

Bottom of the line, but it has a neck and strings.

Yes and Jundo, learn the minor pentatonic shape at the 5th fret and don’t be afraid to feel the blues and really dig into the strings it’s about playing the “wrong” notes as it is about playing the “right” ones, it’s one of the funnest things a beginner can do and to be honest in 15 years I haven’t progressed much beyond that.
