I heard this recently...

"...is the breath going into and going out of your nose Soto, or Forest Tradition, or is it it perhaps Dzogchen ?
Is it Japanese or Thai or Tibetan? All I know is that if we follow it , it can take us home..."

Hi Tony

Indeed, the breath belongs to no tradition at all. Breath awareness, on the other hand, is pivotal in some traditions and not others.
A great practice but not the main focus of either shikantaza or dzogchen.

In shikantaza we may indeed feel the soft movement of the breath in the nostrils as well as hear the birds singing, smell the fresh mown grass and see shadows of moving branches over the gravel path. None of those things belongs to any tradition, yet each tradition has its own way of sitting.
