Oh, and if anyone is looking for some wonderful further readings on "Instructions for the Cook", here are teachings by two of the best "modern cooks" in the Zen World ...

• From The Zen Kitchen To Enlightenment: Refining Your Life by Eihei Dogen; Kosho Uchiyama Roshi (Translator)

and

• Nothing Is Hidden : Essays on Zen Master Dogen's Instructions for the Cook by Shohaku Okumura Roshi (now hard to find!)

ALSO, although not directly about the Tenzo Kyokun, this delicious film and teaching by an actual Tenzo and gifted teacher (and an interesting guy too) .... Edward Espe Brown of Tassajara ...

Treeleaf Zendo should have an Amazon.com "Share Link" IMHO.

Hi Jundo,

Thank you so much for reposting!
To work through this series is actually one of my Ango Commitments this year, as I read the Tenzo Kyokun a while ago and found it very useful/fascinating.

Amazon Prime members can watch the movie "How to cook your life" for free (legally) via Instant Video btw.

Thank you and gassho,

This is a wonderful resource. Are there any other such "series" of talks that can be organized like this? I think it would be great for there to be a page of links to such grouped talks, if that's possible. Like the beginners' talks as well; having pages with all the links makes it more likely that some of us will go back to them.

Thank you, Jundo. This is such valuable information, for life (with it's bad ingredients and how we can view them differently) and for cooking also. Two of my most enjoyable hobbies are growing my own vegetables and cooking. I'm amazed at how much I learn from both as I've started to approach them from a Zen perspective. (meaning, lots of my garden veggies did not do great this year, but it's all good practice)

I am listening to these talks when I am in the kitchen cooking, btw. It's been wonderful!!

When I was a Chef, Tenzo Kyokun was an invaluable resource. Being a farmer now... it still is. I revere Instructions to the Cook.

I second that Ken :-) This series boils the ideas down and makes them palatable for novice and connoisseur alike. I had tasted the ideas before, but as usual, Jundo presents them in a more digestible way. OK done with the cooking puns now.

I am glad folks find it helpful.

Ok, I will copy into somewhere in the "Teacher Talks" area as a sticky.

The book of commentary by Uchiyama Roshi remains my all timeless time "best Zen book" on my list.

PS - Maybe a good time to mention this, our new experiment in "reminding of the option" but not "soliciting" or "requiring" in any way ...

I am so glad if this place and the practice are benefiting you. If someone feels so, they might consider a DONATION to Treeleaf at this LINK (http://www.treeleaf.org/donations-to-treeleaf-sangha/), although there is absolutely no need or requirement to do so. Thank you.
