    For Bendowa study

    Hi everybody,

I would like to list the reference texts for this Bendowa study cycle.

First and foremost, the Nishijima-cross translation which remains the most precise and faithful to
Dogen s words. I know that Mike doesn t like this version anymore but it is a priceless one in my clouded eyes. Let me say again and again that this work is the result of years of a long donkeywork between the office of Nishijima roshi and Mike s den. Mike Cross crafted it all in remarkable English and it is, without a doubt, his work more than anybody else's.The footnotes are great and you should always refer to it.

The seond one we may use ( if you have got it, it is expensive and not online) is the Kazuaki Tanahashi version, more poetic, more jazzy with its beauties and flaws. But I like it a lot. Just like water flowing from the stream.

The last one is Anzan roshi s work mentionned in a previous post.

I have accepted the following students for dokusan: Shohei, Myozan, Dokan, Daido, Myoku, Heisoku, Kyonin ,Rimon and David.

I have a very limited space and I apologize to anybody willing to chat with my stupid self.

    Take care

Just a small comment on this. Bendowa is the first fascicle of both the Shobogenzo translations Taigu mentions. I only mention this because if you do not have the Nishijima-Cross translations, Book 1 is all you need for Bendowa, however they are worthwhile to collect. The Tanahashi version only comes as a set.

The Tanahashi version / translation of Bendowa is available in the book Moon in a Dewdrop - Zen Writings of Master Dogen. It is available new for $17. US and I am sure even less used on alibris.com.

The two-volume Tanahashi Shobogenzo translation is expensive, and most of the key fascicles can be found in the text I have mentioned above as well as its successor Enlightenment Unfolds- The Essential Teachings of Zen Master Dogen. This book is $25 US. Tanahashi and colleagues began translating Shobogenzo fascicles years ago and published the prominent ones along the way. The translations in the newer two volume set are the same as in these editions. So it is possible to collect most of the Tanhashi et al tanslations of Shobogenzo fascicles as well as other Dogen essays for a much lower price.

    Hi Taigu,
Do you rate the Shohaku Okumura translation? It's published with a commentary by Uchiyama Roshi, which I have.

Gassho. I'll reread that so too, hand in hand with Mike Cross.
