I’m Too Sexy for my Kesa

Well, there is some effort in Japan to make Buddhism a bit hipper and flashier to attract younger Japanese folks. That's cool usually, with rapping monks and such, but sometimes ... I just have to wonder if some are going a bit too far ...

Cute young monks are apparently gaining in popularity among young women in Japan. Whether the draw is the sage advice or unadorned good looks ... the popularity of “The Illustrated Picture Book of Beautiful Young Monks,” published last month, seems to indicate that some women are focusing on the physical, rather than metaphysical, attractions of the Buddhist religion.... This illustrated book features hunky monks.

Sorry, what? I'm still laughing at the phrase "hunky monks."

    I don't know, I can't figure out what's really going on here. And I can't figure out Amazon.co.jp enough to get a sneak peek inside the book. Not that I . . . uh . . . want to . . . ops:

Start with the rapping. After that, we'll take it from there

    We're a couple o monks
    Hangin wid Treeleaf
    We're all tofu
    We're not down with beef
    We sit zazen
    Morn, noon, night;
    With bad karma
    We're putting things right.
    Cause we're a couple o monks
    We don't cause no fuss
    We just sit our shit
    We're down wid emptiness
    That's Buddha nature
    To you and me
We dont charge for de dharma
    We give the jewel away free;
    Yeah we're a couple o monks
    From the US and France
    This sunyata thing
    It's a kind o dance
    We're devoted to the kesa
It's the robe we wear, yeah?
    Symbol of reality
    The full Dharmakaya
    We're a couple o monks
    Life is our temple
    We accept life's imperfections
    Each wart and pimple
    We sit with what is
    The way things are
    From your own true nature
    The distance ain't far ...

    ENOUGH!

Re: I’m Too Sexy for my Kesa

What is the most shoking is the place and cloths worn, a beautiful monk don't need this way to attract if he wants to, the simplicity of the robe, a beautiful face are enough.
to be attracted by a monk is natural I think, he is like another human, but he does not need to attrack by the physical aspect, and does not need to attract girls for religious reasons.
It is like a teacher seducing a student, even if he's cute, both have to understand that it's simply impossible.
For example I knew a monk going out with a girl (his student) (not on Treeleaf), when the lovestory is broken, the disgut of the Dharma can appear also.
Sorry for my primitive english ^^
I hope that I don't say anything non ethical

Wow... Wasn't too long ago that you posted about a Japanese Zen fashion contest and monks working as bartenders--what's going on?

Well, this ain't all a bad thing or wholly what meets the eye.

For example, the great Bodhisattva Vimalakirti would head into barrooms to teach ... for where better to perhaps reach folks who could benefit from the Teachings? As some Sutras point out, it is sometimes necessary to bend or break a Precept (such as the one on selling intoxicants) in order to keep it, and to save sentient beings. The bartending monks make much the same assertion ...

    http://www.cnngo.com/tokyo/drink/buddhist-bars-700027

The monk's fashion show was actually a kind of commentary on ordinary materialism and "fashion" ... pointing folks to both the beauty of Buddhist artforms little understood by much of the general public, and a "higher calling" in fashion. Certainly, around Treeleaf, we have some deep appreciation of the beauty of the Kesa, even if the Nyoho-e style practiced here is not as colorful and fancy as the ornate Kesa worn in that show ...

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22273859/ns ... 7mVyUVYzmM

All was an attempt to attract some folks to Buddhism who wouldn't be caught dead in a temple (or rather, only in a temple when dead).

I don't think that I am being just the "devil's advocate" here ... and more "Buddha's advocate". 8)
