Hi Myoken, just a modest contribution to your haiku:

    left in the woods
    still partying

Everybody writes at dawn...Thank you Zak and Seiryu.

Did Ryokan have this intention? Who knows?

Maybe your words will end in an old box in someone's attic. Maybe it will end in a library and people will tell silly stuff about the "the soul" of the artists and his "real goals"... as we can see with some great French poets.

    Don't really matters,

In America, it truly does not matter if you write haiku or not. If you publish, or not. If anyone praises your work today and forgets you tomorrow. Poetry is already marginalized and the haiku world is truly a ghetto within. You go into it knowing that . . . but it is wonderful to participate and meet others from all over who do the same silly thing.

And to that end, here's to the circle!

I like telephone and can. They are real-world words, everyday and concrete. If anyone can find a good haiku in them, great!

I cringe at stuff like heart, soul, ephemeral, gossamer. Oh, for the love of God, stay away from gossamer.

Please, try to avoid desk haiku. I often write haiku as I walk, work, lie down. Please, speak haiku, give them a voice, whisper them, shout them, spit them chew them. Haiku come from my experience of the world. I compose haiku not because I am a poet, or to make poetry, I donít give a dam about poetry, I write haiku to be alive and present in this world. Not to live in my head and through my senses. To unfold my being-seing-perceiveng in all this. And meet what comes and goes. Death can take place anytime, haiku is like Hanami, to watch blossoms. I am going to die, and haiku writing haiku doing is a celebration of a fragile and floating existence, it is sheer gratitude. Gratitude. And gratitude again.

Donít write too many words. Many haiku in English are too wordy. Cut. Keep it simple. You should be able to speak any haiku in a single short breath. Donít pack poems with fancy words be careful with adjectives, bad writing is often over using adjectives. Donít use special poetic words and reject words like plastic, telephone or can. Avoid likes and dislikes. In the haiku world, everything is precious, worth looking at and worthy of appreciation. Donít be afraid of words and things. Call things by their name. Go for what is, what is real around and inside you. Go where you dance, go even where it hurts. Haiku is a tool of discovery and self inquiry. Pick up things unnoticed, left aside, pick up what people donít even see or pay attention to. Pick up garbage and practice garbage arrangement. Celebrate the ordinary. In the simple activity of seeing, of being you will find love. Jizo or Kannon are not statues in fancy temples and museums but your very attention to the world, your activity in full bloom and the very people and things you meet everyday. This is the real magic. And it is available here and now. And it is now or never. Each second passes and wonít come back. You wonít be given a second go. There is only one. This one. Here and now.

The only part of this that confused me was the part about avoiding words like plastic, telephone, and can. Can you explain that? Is it because they are modern words?

    Hi Chet,

In the old school of haiku, rhythm, seasonal element, and all these old fashioned rules apply.
In modern Haiku, feel free, as you wish...In Japan, you have both schools. Many people think that Santoka's haiku are not haiku...
I use modern words like plastic, tarmac, fumes, can etc. because I write about what I witness and see around.

    Hi Josh,
Found and downloaded Fanboy Haiku on Kindle. Given the work you obviously put into it(240 Haiku) the price was a steal! I'll definitely have fun reading more!

Hello! I think it's helpful to share experiences, especially for first timers like me. I am going on a Mindfulness based retreat at Taraloka (http://www.taraloka.org.uk), a retreat in a women's Buddhist community in the Shropshire countryside in the UK. There is a nice write up on Taraloka on the good retreat guide website (http://www.thegoodretreatguide.com I think that is the correct link, it might just be http://www.goodretreatguide.com). I use mindfulness with some of my clients for work (I work in a hospital), it has a good clinical evidence base in addition to being common sense, down to earth good stuff... Anyway, I'm hoping to deepen my own practice to help me be able to reflect more fully and support my clients effectively.
I would be interested in hearing more about your experiences too.

Re: haiku writing as a way

It's the day before spring break. I'm sitting in class awaiting student papers, which means I'm not doing anything (like always! I kid, I kid). I thought I would post a couple haiku. These are from my blog: http://www.stories-like-stories-you-know.blogspot.com/. I'm a writer, just one of several costumes.

My wife has been away for the last couple weeks:

    headlights pass over walls.
    even the dog
    perks his ears for you.

    Driving to work one morning:

    stranded roadside
    smoke billows from the engine.
    starlings black against the sky.

    Something else:

    taking the trash out
    to forget this zen.
dead dog on the wet road.

I enjoyed reading many of the poems in this thread. Many thanks,

    Alan
