    Hi Jundo,
Lovely to see your workings on what is also my fave of Master Dogen's work. Unfortunately there is a problem with nos. 22,26 and 31. I tried clicking on view on youtube but they won't load there either. Is there another place I can find them?

    Hi Joe,

I just checked each, and they all seem to be linking and playing fine now. Sometimes Youtube is a little stubborn ... but that is just one of the rough ingredients we must cook with and the very focus of "Instructions for the Cook!"

    Thanks Jundo,
I shall go straight back and download them before they disappear again.

This site is like a treasure chest. I'm constantly uncovering new teachings all over the place! and I can't believe that there are so many free translations of classic Zen texts. It's wonderful.

Re: Master Dogen's 'INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE COOK'

I just listened to the second talk about simplification, and the word "inundated" comes to mind. That's how I feel sometimes.... just inundated with stuff. But I catch myself wanting to go buy something to get that diversion. My wife and I caught ourselves doing that and we've stopped it for the most part. It's like overdoing anything, it can stifle one's existence. Over-buying, overeating, etc.

This talk also brought to mind something the character Jean Luc Picard said on an episode of Star Trek: TNG. "We no longer seek the acquisition of wealth. We now pursue the betterment of ourselves." It's always been a hope of mine that one day we drop the monetary system, and we all learn how to work together for what's truly important, taking care of each other.

But for the interim, and back to reality ( I have to confess I'm a Trekee with my head in the stars). Apply this practice of simplicity to our lives. Like zazen, just drop things like thoughts, and focus on what is important and how much we already have. Just to live in a country like the US and having to worry about which thing I want to eat or want to buy instead of having to worry if I will be able to eat is a marvelous gift that I am thankful for everyday.

Re: Master Dogen's 'INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE COOK'

I really liked talk xii (Old Dead People) a lot... a lot! Sometimes I'm very naive, and I romanticize Zen practice into believing that these masters walked on water. I like crushing those beliefs, so I can practice a true practice. This is an ongoing thing that I'm becoming more conscious of, and I think it ties in to this week's precept of not discussing others faults and elevating oneself. I guess this is sort of the inverse. Do not put others on pedestals and lower oneself. Just be who you are. Whoever the hell that is (I'm 35 and I don't know; I just know I try to do the best I can whatever it is I'm doing).

In any case, is this what is meant by killing the Buddha? Does it mean not to believe or elevate historical beings into gods, or to use Jundo's word "hagiography"?

Perhaps, but it also means to bring the Buddha and Ancestors teachings and lives to life in your life. You kill "them" by making "them" into "living you". Something like that.

Point to the Buddha and I will respond appropriately. That statue on the altar? A religious garden gnome. When you think you know Buddha, empty your cup and you can get to know Buddha.

    Zen speak! :P
