Thank you Jundo, Joyo, and everyone ... what an amazing experience. Even though there is space and time, no borders, no boundaries, no here or there, it is wonderful to come together in person ... to sit and practice. I am very grateful for you all. =)

The short story of it all is ... Joyo and my daughter live in the same small town, so I decided to come and pay them both a visit for my vacation. I will write more on it later, but that is the short version for now.

    Have a great night everyone.

Did anyone else hear a little, "We will, we will, Zazen!" at the end?

I hope the opera was Luscious.

While googling "Buddha Opera" I came across this ...

Perhaps there is hope for the youth of this world yet.

Thank you all. It is so good that there are no scheduling conflicts here. I enjoyed the opera, and I just did the zazenkai. Jundo, that video you posted was funny. Like Kyonin said, it was so bad that it was good. The zazenkai talk was just what I needed. I'd caught myself with my eyes closing in the previous sitting period. Awareness of "the eye that never sleeps" helps. Have a great weekend, everyone.

What a great way to end zazenkai! I vote your daughter reads the heart sutra next week. Embrace the chaos as I used to say when my kids were that age.
Thanks to all and wishing you all well.

    I approved you Hobbie.

We are going to have to make some better system of getting folks approved, as I see many folks waiting.

Thank. You. I may have a few more people in my area joining. I will help to explain to them how to do this and share what I've learned. I know how to do the heart and kesa sutra by heart, but will need a cheat sheet for the others during chants, is this okay to hold during chants?

    Hi Hobbie,

Yes, we generally hold the Sutra pages respectfully this way ...

... fingers closed on the outside, like a Boyscout salute ...

... switching to Gassho when we Gassho, holding the Chant Book between thumbs (like this, but we tend to hold the hands up higher, at face level) ...

And in case anyone is wondering, a film of basic Zendo procedures such as this will be added to our Beginners Series of videos.

I'll need to change my kinhin hand mudra, as well, but it looks similar to the way Brad Warner does it.

  45. #45
    Hi Hobbie,

We generally make Shashu for Kinhin and walking through the Zendo this way, with the right hand, thumb tucked in ...

... held heart level, elbows out ... but relaxed, not too tight and rigid ...

That is the standard Soto Way, but some groups related to Kodo Sawaki Roshi also turn the hands sideways ...

My Teacher, Nishijima Roshi, held the hands the standard Soto way, as you can see at about 6:20 mark here ...

    Which way does Brad do?

Brad holds it vertical like you do in the YouTube videos. The Deshimaru lineage holds it like Kodo Sawaki Rossi.

    Hi Hobbie,

The sitting has not happened yet for this week (Sept. 23rd), it begins about 3 hours from now. You should have received an email invitation, and will likely receive another just around the start time. Please check.

Please 'sit-a-long' with our weekly FRIDAY/SATURDAY 'LIVE FROM TREELEAF' 90 minute ZAZENKAI, netcast from 10am Japan time Saturday morning (that is New York 9pm, Los Angeles 6pm (Friday night), London 2am and Paris 3am (early Saturday morning)
