Treeleaf App online for testing and commenting

    Hi everyone,

The yet to be named Treeleaf-Jundo-Quote-App is available for testing. This is a browser version (beta 1), if we're all happy with it I'll turn it into a proper app for Android, iPhone and Windows Phone.

Please take a look and let me know what you think, and be frank about it. If it's crap, I want to know
Is it clear enough? Should things be different? Any comments are welcome.

    Thanks!

    Hi Ongen,

Looking great! I love the use of the Treeleaf colors and open space.

One minor "under the hood" quibble: in the current version, the XMLHttpRequest() for app/quotes.txt is running on every tap. I'm not sure if the final version will share code from this (or will even load from the network), but if so, I think it would be more efficient and allow for better error handling to load the quotes at runtime, and then pick one on the tap event.

    Hi Ongen,

    nice, clean app.
I have been playing around with it for some time.

"Beautiful and ugly, in a Buddha's eye" and the next click reveiled only "take x breaths".
Are those meant to be separate, so sometimes no words of wisdom, only "breathe" (good too)?
Otherwise ther might be a bug?

(Or it was Shingen talking to me, telling me to stop playing with apps... )

    Thank you for your work.

    Hi.

Just a question, why is the Treeleaf logo Big and the text small, shouldn't it be the other way around?

otherwise, nice app, Its all good practice.

    Hi Sekishi,

The quotes.txt file will be inside the app for now, so it will function completely offline at this moment. We can update the quotes through an app update. I feel that it has no use making an elaborate online quote management system with remote fetching of quotes before we know if the app is widely appreciated.

Still you are right, I will see if I can get it a bit more streamlined

Hi Fugen, I don't think I can get the text bigger without it starting to look awquard, but I can make the logo smaller. Will see how that works out.

I just want to thank all our members who supplied quotes. We could not use them all, and we had to shorten many into a single phrase. but I believe we included most of the folks who had a suggestion.

Quite the mirror this app is. I wondered if this would be useful as I quickly tapped through trying to get to the end and was "irritated" that there was no back button because i wanted to reread a message that I went by too fast. I had to slow down. I finally took the offered advice and I started to laugh. Shikantaza. thought-release-thought-release. I found it simple, vast and useful.

Does the app link back to Treeleaf if further information is wanted for shikantaza and zen buddhism?

Thanks for all the heavy lifting Ongen.

    Hi Jiken,

Funny since I had the same thing haha!

Yes there is a link back, if you click the questionmark in the right bottom corner. Should that be more obvious?

I have changed the working a little bit due to your comment:
When you tap the screen, you get a quote which will remain there until you either restart the app or click the "Clear" button that appears after the quote is displayed. That way you can keep the quote as a reminder during the day.

    At everyone:

New version (beta 2) online now, with better functionality and nicer font

    Hi Ongen,

Nice clean app. As a visually impaired person, I would appreciate a larger/bolder font with better contrast. Also, have you considered the Kindle, uploading apps from the Android stores is tricky on a Kindle Fire.

    LET's NAME THE APP!

    Hey guys,

Ongen and I are looking for suggestions for App names. The working title now is ...

    Wisdom reMINDer

    from Treeleaf Zendo

Let us know if you like that, or have something even better.

In return for helping to name the App there is little to offer but the satisfaction of helping, much Merit, possible good rebirth, and Buddha Nature (although you have the latter already)

    Any suggestions?

    Leaves of Wisdom?

Although I googled Leaves of Wisdom, and I see it is also a "Baha'i coloring resource for children", so I'm not sure if we'd get into trouble.

I'm just looking for a good rebirth so hopefully you pick it

    Hey Ongen,

I like the colors and the base design! It is looking very good. I just have some thoughts I would like to share.

I think it would be better to remove the bar at the bottom. It resembles a search bar or some other means of input, yet that's not the intended behavior. It confused me a little bit at first.

I feel the text about tapping the screen would do better to sit in the area the Clear button shows up in. So then that area fades from the text message, to the button, and back again between states. It gives a sense of connected-ness between both states, and then the eyes don't have to really shift between either.

I would also suggest making the ? info button slightly bigger, if not at least 40px in one dimension, up to 48. Then it helps it be a little less daunting to hit for folks with bigger fingers.

I also kind of feel that the text for the quote, breaths, clear, and tapping anywhere should be a bit bigger. I have a smaller phone at least, and I gave the page a go directly in it (the one within the iframe, so no phone outline). To me, it feels like I'm putting a bit too much energy trying to focus on the smaller text that it kind of takes away from the simple calming effect a bit. (Perhaps it has to do with the size of the logo text in comparison? That it causes some sort of expected size trick/feeling with my eyes? So maybe just that the logo text needs to be smaller.)

Overall, I think the idea is really good. I just have those thoughts on how I think it could be tweaked to be better. I hope there is something at least a little helpful in there.

    Thanks for reading.
