    Sitting with Jeff Shore

    Hi all,

It came on my path, so I signed on for a 5 day sesshin with Jeff Shore. Then I realized that he is a Rinzai teacher. I started off with Rinzai and ended up with soto style zen so it's nothing new for me and I don't really see any problems with mixing up a bit, but still I wonder how you think about this matter?

Anything I should hold in mind :P as I sit that week?

    When in Rome...

Just sit and try not to think on the differences so much.

If I'm already enlightened why the hell is this so hard?

Oh, you are banished from this Sangha, and probably are going to be reborn now as a cocker spaniel.

I do not know Jeff personally, but he is a great Buddhist scholar connected to Hanazono University and I have liked some of his talks I have heard.

Just sit. Learn and be inspired. There will be some differences in approach, and much commonality ... and they are just differences in approach. As I often say, the many flavors of Buddhism or Zen Practice are precisely the same, even though sometimes quite different ... sometimes rather different, yet always exactly the same.

By the way, just kidding about the banishment and cocker spaniel.

Haha, thank you all for your replies. As I said I didn't see any harm in it in the first place. I am looking forward to it, although it does seem intense too, since it will be five days of sitting all day, and they encourage sitting through the nights too.

It will be in the first week of september, will let you know how it went!

    Hi Vincent,

I sat with Jeff when he was in the UK back in March as part of a three day retreat.

As Jundo said there are differences/similarities. I also feel he's a good teacher and would probably go again if he's in the UK.

The night sitting was quite challenging... :-)

I am disappointed by the lack of dharma drama exhibited by this sangha. Please let me know where the REAL practitioners are.

I'm convinced my wife would rather me be a cocker spaniel at times! Let us know how it goes.

It all begins when we say, “I”. Everything that follows is illusion.
