Thread: Give me the reaching.

    Give me the reaching.

Student: I'm reaching for the light, please help me.
Teacher: Forget about the light. Give me the reaching.

I love this Koan. I came upon it in a beautiful article by John Tarrant. It shows us how the only true meditation is doing just for the sake of doing. Goals start us, but then we can abandon them.

We are all about self-improvement and moving forward too. It is simply that we see each step as itself a total arrival, and "self-improvement" as simultaneously "no self, so what to improve?". We become better, more Buddha-like, Wiser and more Compassionate ... even though Buddha all along. The reaching is the light.

    Alex,

I read this several weeks ago and thought of you.

Do you play to get to the end of the song?

    Why do you play?
