    Homeless home

    Treading along in this dreamlike, illusory realm,
    Without looking for the traces I may have left;
    A cuckoo's song beckons me to return home;
    Hearing this, I tilt my head to see
    Who has told me to turn back;
    But do not ask me where I am going,
    As I travel in this limitless world,
    Where every step I take is my home.

    Please let us not be so concerned about what we have done and not done, let s not play endlessly the good old tunes of what has happened, what if I did this or did not that? For years we have had these going on and on in the back ore front of our mind.The past is not ours to see and toy with. Done and gone. We all go along, drifting like the clouds of the Zen saying in the deep blue sky ( clouds are part of the sky, witout them, the sky would not be), we roam like a dream within a dream, bubble blown away without any place to abide. The Dharma is found like a bird song, meeting the real person here and now is all that matters, past and future are cast aside, home is not a place, home is who we are, this entire body - mind - breath-world , home is the action, the samadhi of receiving and using the self, jijuyu zanmai and everything that radiates through this being-time.

    Hello Taigu,

    thank you for this. The sky is such a powerful, living image...sometimes I feel that the world would be home to a few slightly more happy people if everyone had a massive glass window revealing a vast open sky in front of their office desk.

    Open sky. So simple but so hard to realize it's there.

    Thank you, Taigu.

    Where are you from?
    - From here.
    No, but where were you born?
    - Oh, so you're not asking about me. You're interested in a person long gone.

    Incredible appropriate presence of this communique, Taigu.

    Though it seems that haunting memory, like personal hungry ghosts,
    with bloated bellies coming from unfulfilled, delusory and illusory appetites;
    with impossibly thin throats by which one cannot be fed, and would never be fed,
    make havoc, by choice,
    pursue suffering, and pamper a wounded, small self.
    And, in a moment, like a flicker of a candle
    are gone.

    No poet myself but I think Taigu's wonderful words and my feeling are echoed in Ryokan's words:

    Without a jot of ambition left
    I let my nature flow where it will
    There are ten days of rice in my bag
    And, by the hearth,a bundle of firewood.
    Who prattles of illusion or nirvana?
    Forgetting the equal dusts of name and fortune,
    Listening to the night rain on the roof of my hut,
    I sit at ease, both legs stretched out.

    With deep & humble bows

    Silver Cliffs and Iron Mountains

    from a talk by John Tarrant in 2003

    Eventually you come to a place where you can’t go on and you can’t go back. You have arrived at the base of cliffs; you can’t scale them, you can’t get around them, and there’s no handy tunnel through them. The Japanese teacher Hakuin called this the Silver Cliffs and Iron Mountains. It’s a daunting place—that’s the point of it. And when you arrive here your life and your journey can become your own.

    Before this, we might live by tales that somebody told us, nursery rhymes that we learned by heart. Such tales take many shapes; in them, the past is rectified and the future determined. Should have, could have and would have appear in starring roles; automatic sequences and judgments fill the mind.

    But now, standing at the base of this overhang, it doesn’t matter that you were once betrayed and tormented. It doesn’t matter that you have wasted your life, that you have succeeded beyond your dreams, and that you have done irreparable hurt to others. In spite of or because of it all, here you are at the place of last resort. Silver cliffs and iron mountains block your way. All your wriggling and being right, and all your complaining and being wrong, is not going to help.

    Now it might become clear that, as the Diamond Sutra mentions, the mind of the past can’t be grasped, and the mind of the future can’t be grasped. But the real secret is that the mind of the present can’t be grasped, either. That which is, is that which is.
