SIT-A-LONG with Taigu: Just a begging bowl
Ryokan, the old big useless fool, writer of cheap poetry and wanderer in both worlds, this one and the next, writes:
Violets and dandelions
mixed together
in my beggar's bowl
are offered to all the buddhas
Manifest here, there and everywhere
Broken bowls, begging bowls, that's what we are.
Nothing special, nobody special.
Takuhatsu is the action of going begging in the streets, floating away in this fleeting world, things given and received, but who gives, who receives?
In the light of the sad events of the past few weeks, Let's take a look at this bowl.

I have become that bowl being offered at your door open to receive whatever it is that you offer that nourishes me.

Hi Taigu.
I always enjoy listening to your talks. Many precious words, yet no trace in need to be left behind.

Taigu,
I appreciate your dedication as a teacher when you are surrounded by uncertainty and change of the most profound sort. A real lesson to us from real teachers (yourself and Jundo).
The presence you have both shown in the last two weeks is a remarkable and not to be forgotten example of "every day is a good day" or "sun-faced Buddha, moon-faced Buddha"
Thank you and a deep bow,
Yugen

So important to accept what there is, and how difficult too. In the end we are all beggars accepting charity from the universe.
Deep gassho hoping to float one day

Thank you for this, Taigu. I watched it several times.
A statement like, "We owe our existence to the generosity of the universe" just isn't something I hear often in my culture, where . . . well . . . a sense of entitlement often reigns supreme. Nor do we often think of ourselves as nothing, like clouds. Perhaps we should.
Much to think about.
Gassho,
Jennifer

Thank you Taigu,
quite different from the Theravadin begging run, and yet the same.
Re: SIT-A-LONG with Taigu: Just a begging bowl
Hello Rev. Taigu,
Thank you for this talk, from one who was and still is homeless.
My last year of school and first year of work, I lived on a concrete floor in the back of a computer shop. Ate what I could get, bathed at a good friend's house, was occasionally the guest of a gracious host.
My wife's bed is the only one I've slept in since I was 16. (Barring, of course, hotels and the like since we've been together.)
Though I now have a roof over my head, (too much) food in my belly, it would be a blatant lie to say that this place, that place is my home. Who can ever really have a home?
Metta,
Saijun
