[Engaged] Sewing for Charity

Being disabled, my income puts me below the poverty line. So, financial donations are not possible for me. I did some thinking about how I would like to give to the less fortunate considering my financial limitations and I've decided to do some charity sewing. If anyone wants to have a sew-a-long or something just let me know. I'm hoping to sew something for a different charity each month. I've got 3 picked out so far:

http://purplestitchproject.org/ Crafting for kids with epilepsy. I have epilepsy, so it's easy for me to have empathy for these kids.

I wept when I read about the animals in cages never having the experience of anything under their feet and bodies but metal bars. Looking forward to making at least a few animals a bit more comfortable. http://www.snugglesproject.org/

This one was absolutely heartbreaking to read about. This organization collects and sews feminine hygeine products for women that don't have access to them. There are girls and women in the world who must stay home, miss school, miss work, etc because they don't have sanitary pads. They are sometimes exploited due to the lack of this very basic product that us women in the US and other countries take for granted. I'm very much looking forward to contributing to this charity. http://www.daysforgirls.org/

That is a wonderful idea, Bunny. I am a knitter and love the idea of snuggles for animals. This is another great project for those of us who are less able to do outside volunteer work, litter clearing etc.

I found this UK page too with lots of charity knitting projects: http://www.ukhandknitting.com/knitting_for_charity.php. I very much like the idea of knitting hats for the homeless and also Tanzanian babies to help prevent hypothermia.

Am so glad you pointed me towards this, Bunny. I would not have thought to look otherwise.

These are some really great ideas, Bunny. I wish I was handy with a needle...of any kind. Maybe it's something I could work toward.

I know this thread is a year old, but I figured I'd give it a bump since it's about the same time of year again...

I don't sew or knit much anymore, but I think it's about time to start up again! Will anybody else be joining in this year? I'm mostly interested in Days for Girls, Halos of Hope, and Purple Stitch Project. (I actually used to sew my own menstrual pads in high school before I switched to a menstrual cup 9 years ago, so I think Days for Girls is a great idea!)

I am knitting/ crocheting as a part of my Ango commitments. Currently I'm making baby booties and hats for preemies. But I have some fabric that I was also going to turn into blankets for the Snuggles Project.If some funds free up to buy more fabric I will look at Days for Girls which looks somewhere very worth while to sew for. But they are very specific on the types of fabrics that must be used, so I will need to make a trip to the fabric store to check prices, options, etc.

What a great idea to provide for preemies! Are you donating to a local hospital, an online organization, or?

Your point about Days for Girls may actually put that organization out of the running for me this year. I do have a lot of 100% cotton flannel on-hand from when I made my own, but I can't afford to buy additional fabric -- in particular, the PUL for the "shield."

But if anybody wants to do something for Days for Girls, maybe I can send the flannel I do have to you? I have so much that I never used.

Currently I'm working on items to donate to Stitches from the Heart, http://www.stitchesfromtheheart.org/.

I looked more into Days for Girls and you can sew just parts of the kits and donate those items. So you could sew your flannel for them if you wanted.

Oh, I'm so glad this thread was brought back up so I could see how many crafters we have here! My husband and I started a craft business a couple of years ago because we each have complications that keep either of us from being able to work outside the home. At first, he was knitting and I was doing crochet. Over time, things have changed so that he does cross-stitch and I do hand embroidery, as well as pattern design because we've started selling some of our original patterns.

We collaborated this year with a friend who sells her handmade pinback buttons to make a set with two buttons and a piece of art I embroidered that celebrates science. Then we donated a portion of the money after selling it to the Science Club for Girls, which is an organization that partners women who are scientists with girls who are interested in science and science careers to mentor them.
