    The Twentieth Gate

    Reflection on there being no self is a gate of Dharma illumination;
    for [with it] we do not taintedly attach to self.

    No self (emptiness) :
    a state of "pure consciousness" in which the mind has been emptied of all particular objects and images

    May we, together with all beings
    Reflect on emptiness
    That we may be free from attachment to self

    May this offering bring peace to all beings

    The Nineteenth Gate

    Reflection on suffering is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with
    it] we cease all aspirations.

    Suffering :
    to undergo or feel pain or distress

    May we together with all buddhas
    Reflect on suffering of all beings
    That we may be free to see reality

    May this offering bring peace to all beings
    May our actions contribute to the harmony of The Universe
    And, may all hearts and minds ...

    The Eighteenth Gate

    Reflection on inconstancy is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with
    it] we reflect upon the desires of the triple world.

    Inconstancy :
    not constant; changeable; fickle; variable


    May we, together with all buddhas
    Certify the existance of impermanance
    That we may be free of desires

    May this offering bring peace to all beings
    May our actions contribute to the harmony of The Universe ...

  4. 17/108 Gates of Dharma Illumination

    The Seventeenth Gate

    Abandonment is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] we turn
    away from the five desires*..

    *five desires
    [五欲] (Jpn go-yoku )
    (1) The desires that arise from the contact of the five sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and body) with their respective objects (color and form, sound, smell, taste, and texture).
    (2) The desires for wealth, sexual love, food and drink, fame, and sleep.

    Joy is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] we abandon all
    unpleasant things.

    Joy :
    the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying

    May we, together with all buddhas
    Realize delight and happiness
    That we may put unpleasant things to rest

    May this offering bring peace to all beings
    May our actions contribute to the harmony of The ...
