ANNOUNCEMENT: Treeleaf 'ANGO' (The 100 days)

.
Hello. This is our forum where we held discussions in preparation for our recent (January) annual Treeleaf Sangha JUKAI (Undertaking the Precepts) CEREMONY. This Forum also includes a discussion thread and instruction films on Rakusu Sewing by Rev. Taigu Turlur, for which we thank him very much. Although this Jukai is now completed, PREPARATIONS FOR OUR NEXT JUKAI WILL BEGIN IN THE FALL of 2010. Gassho - Jundo

ANNOUNCEMENT: Treeleaf 'ANGO' (The 100 days)

Postby Jundo on Tue Aug 11, 2009 7:18 pm

.
Hello Dear Leafers,

Commencing from AUGUST 29th 2009 ...

... AND CULMINATING WITH OUR "AT HOME" 2-DAY ROHATSU RETREAT (currently scheduled for the weekend of December 5 & 6, via live netcast), our Treeleaf Sangha will hold our first traditional (yet "fully online") ...

-------------------- 'ANGO' (100 Day Special Practice Season) -------------------

I hope you will consider to participate (especially those folks undertaking JUKAI this year)

What is "ANGO"?

Ango, literally “peaceful dwelling”, is a period of concentrated and committed Zen practice, usually lasting three-months in the Soto Zen tradition. The roots of Ango arise from the earliest days of the Buddhist monastic community in India, when monks and nuns would cease their wandering and settle together in one place for the rainy season. Even today in Zen monasteries of Japan, Ango is a time of intense and rigorous training, typically including long hours of Zazen, short hours for sleep, formal meals taken in the Zendo (meditation hall), and a structured schedule for the rest of the day comprising periods for work, liturgy, study, rest, and personal needs. In the West, most Zen groups have adapted the form of the three-month practice period to the needs and demands of life in their communities.

In keeping with the philosophy and path of practice here at Treeleaf ("life is our temple"), we will seek to obtain many of the same ... (and, I believe, quite a few additional and very special) ... fruits and lessons of a traditional Ango while sitting within the "monastery" of our day-to-day lives, jobs, problems, unending distractions and family responsibilities.

In doing so, I believe, we will have the opportunity to taste the sweetness (and sometime bitterness ... no one without the other) of concentrated Zen practice ... and learn lessons ... in many ways more poignant, practical, immediate and powerful than what might be known to monks locked away in a sheltered mountain monastery. As always, we will be tasting the power of this practice in the world, in daily life ... and not hidden away from it all.

Zen Sangha around the world have experimented in recent years with various forms of Ango for people who cannot (or do not wish to) isolate themselves from the world for weeks on end, often commuting to practice and with limited time. We will build our Ango learning from their precedents and experiences. As well, there have been a handful of attempts recently at a fully "online" Ango ... including Tricycle Magazine's "Big Sit" of this year ... and our Treeleaf Ango will build upon both the successes, and hurdles, of those efforts.

Now, I believe that "intensity" of practice can best be attained ... not by increasing the raw quantity, bodily discomfort or physical isolation of practice ... but primarily and powerfully by bringing new sincerity, commitment, vigor and seriousness into what we may already do (non-do).

As each person's life situation, family and work responsibilities vary, I will be happy to consult with folks to adjust and design a practice schedule and content to fit those circumstances. However, the most important point to keep in mind is that those work duties at the office, daily problems and family responsibilities ARE THE PRACTICE PLACE as much as the Zafu (sitting cushion). The home kitchen is the temple kitchen, the office, store or factory is the garden when we practice Samu (work practice), etc. Each presents countless opportunities for practice, and for manifesting Wisdom and Compassion.

One can be flexible in designing one's schedule, and flexible in meeting the changing demands of each day ... but commitment to "stick with this" is required. One might change the order of things, even push certain practices back a few days ... but one must also not let things slide, and must somehow promptly find the time to accomplish all that one has committed to do. There is flexibility and moderation ... but not laxity. The purpose is not to overwhelm or "burn us out"; it is to mutually work together through a period of dedicated practice. We will do our best each and every day, and let Zazen soak into our life. But key to that is consistency, not giving up, finding the time and not quitting.

Now, this "First All-Online Treeleaf Ango" (as so many things about Treeleaf) is an experiment ... so many of the following elements may be adjusted as we go along (even in the coming days, as Sangha members provide input). However, I believe that Ango participants should commit to all or most of the following. In all cases, the emphasis will be on increasing ... not raw quantity ... but the sincerity, commitment, vigor and seriousness of what we undertake:

+ Add a minimum of 5 minutes per sitting to however long one's current sitting time, and commit to sit that time - at least daily - without missing a single day. As well, for those who can and whose schedule will realistically allow ... consider adding an additional full sitting period per day to however many times per day one is now sitting Zazen. Whatever your commitment, be realistic about what you can maintain ... and then (absent sheer impossibility) stick with it, without missing a single day

+ Join in each and every 1-hour Saturday Treeleaf Zazenkai, and 4-hour monthly Treeleaf Zazenkai netcast without fail. However, as always, each will be available in recorded form (so may be joined at a time to fit your schedule).

+ Add, if you can, Metta Verse Practice ( viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1199 ) and Nurturing Seeds Practice ( viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1730 ) to your routine each day.

+ Listen, as possible, to each short (usually 5 minutes or so) 'Sit-a-Long' Talk (to be presented by Jundo and Taigu on the Treeleaf "Beliefnet" Blog) during the practice period, also all available in recorded form to meet your schedule. A special series of talks will be presented during the Ango period (on a theme still being determined. I am thinking right now that we shall use Dogen's "Instructions for the Cook" Tenzokyokun, although it is subject to change. Necessary materials will be provided).

+ Join frequently in online discussions in our Forum of the content and Ango experiences, sharing the ups and downs and middles.

+ If technically possible, commit to meet with Jundo or Taigu by Skype video at least once per month during the Ango.

+ If simultaneously studying for Jukai, complete and participate in each of the readings and discussions each week regarding the individual Precepts, as well as complete Rakusu sewing.

+ Make formal study on the meaning and philosophy of Samu (work practice, the central theme of Dogen's "Instructions for the Cook"), and apply such perspectives and attitudes in your family and work duties each day.

+ Commit to give up one or two items or passions one truly loves during the Practice period, for example, sweets after meals, luxurious meals, cigarettes, television, consumer purchases of luxury items.

+ Commit to mindful eating, and silently or orally recite one short meal chant (to be provided) before all meals.

+ Commit a portion of your weekly income during the period to extra charitable donations (assuming you have the financial ability). I do not accept any "Dana" financial contributions for Treeleaf, as we now have sufficient resources for what we are doing. However, I do encourage people to make financial donations to charities that help folks, e.g., feeding the poor, finding a cure for a disease. Both donations and Samu work should be a bit beyond the point where it starts to hurt. If you have the time, consider extra volunteer activities in your community as well.

+ Commit to sit our SPECIAL 2-DAY ROHATSU RETREAT (to be held online, currently scheduled for netcast the weekend of December 5 & 6) at the culmination of the Ango. Again, it would be good to participate "live", but all will be available in recorded form to fit schedules. The retreat will likely be similar to last year's schedule and content:

http://blog.beliefnet.com/treeleafzen/2 ... day-j.html

The way to go about registering for this Ango is to post your commitment here in this Forum. In the traditional manner, once your commitment is received, your name is entered on a list of ango participants which, at the start of the Ango period, is inscribed on a 'paper scroll' and posted at Treeleaf Zendo in Japan.

All in all, I do not believe that the above demands will unreasonably add to the amount of time people are already dedicating to their Jukai and Rakusu sewing work, or to their existing practices. I believe, if examined closely, the time is manageable. Again, I am flexible to work out a schedule for those with special needs ... commitment and consistency being the most important.

I hope you will join us in this endeavor to manifest Great Non-Doing. How wonderful it will be if you join the Treeleaf community in this commitment to intensive practice for a time, together finding our self where we find ourself!

The Jukai study and sewing will probably start about early-mid September. That will give us a chance to settle into Ango.

Rakusu sewers may wish to start gathering materials and supplies (that's Rev. Taigu's jurisdiction :D ) But I might suggest that Rakusu sewers review generally last years' Sewing thread before that time ...

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1152

Also, there were some questions from a couple of folks about just what is "Dana" and what is "Samu" ... and we'll get into that. No worries! 8)

Hi Ron,

I am very flexible on when the Rohatsu Retreat gets sat ... so long as it eventually gets sat, and as promptly as your schedule will allow.

In fact, one might even perhaps instead sit last year's Rohatsu Retreat again ... earlier than November (how's that for some sentence structure ... the way we think about time-&-place here at Treeleaf!)

Two things -- + If technically possible, commit to meet with Jundo or Taigu by Skype video at least once per month during the Ango.

What does it take to be technically possible?

+ If simultaneously studying for Jukai, complete and participate in each of the readings and discussions each week regarding the individual Precepts, as well as complete Rakusu sewing.

I have a completed Rakusu that I would like to use. Would I need sew another?

OK --- I found out abot Skype --- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH80vs8DweU

So question two is now question one and there are no two questions but one question only.

Though I am looking forward to the Ango, I will be in the middle of moving to a new house in September (which means I might have a few days without internet). Other than that, I am all set and ready to go.

Ok what If you don't have any of these? we scaled life down dramatically to enable me to stay home, the only time we have sweets is when my family comes over from Netherland I don't smoke don't watch tv don't buy anything that I can buy second hand new don't eat out well you get the idea.
my passions are knitting and spinning which are one of the ways I get a little extra income and prepare us for the wintermonths so not knitting/spinning is not and option.

I guess I could give up my washingmachine?

Crikeys! Its Buddhist super Lent! I was Eastern Orthodox for many years and our Lent lasted 6 weeks. We abstained from meat, dairy, eggs, oil, alcohol, seafood, sweets, and on strict days, ate one meal. Services on Wenesdays and Sundays(lasting one and a half to two hours, and during Holy Week, services nightly. Pascha service started at 10PM and lasted until about 2 AM. There is beauty in such austerity, but my ancient knees are giving me a hard time with 20 minutes so I will not commit to the full Ango this year. But I will commit to consistency, extended sitting, and other practices. Sorry for the long post and the ecumenical lecture, but I thought it might be of interest to some. Thank you for the encouragement and I will make the effort to not make an effort-just do.

in case i forgot to say i am very much in... so i will gladly do this Ango.

lately i have been very lazy towards my practice and i didnt know why. i think i might of realized it a few minutes ago as i was sitting zazen.

it occurred to me that about 6-7 month ago i was being bombarded by rockets ( see the following link for more information viewtopic.php?t=1295 this is for the new members who did not follow my report during this time and wish to do so, dont feel you have too... )
during that time i felt a sort of helplessness and depression, i think that the feeling of some melancholy has struck me pretty deep... as i have been struggling with many issues in my personal, professional and social life.
so i think i know what was bothering me and can no move beyond it. and this ango is a great opportunity and a point of origin for me to do so.

i know this is probably not the most appropriate thread to post this but i felt it might be relevant and had the need to poor my heart out.

Hi Jundo,

thank you for the opportunity to deepen practice. I doubt if what I will be doing will constitute an Ango as laid out in the guidelines, but just to let you know that I've already started reading more from the booklist (the previous discussions in the booklist forum are very useful), will increase my sitting time along with everyone else and have identified some things that I can do more of and less of.

Yes, today is the first day of the rest of your life ... and the first day of Ango too! :D

I will have a little talk on the sit-a-long later today to kick off the festivities!

I am content that so many folks will join in this Ango.

Dear Jundo and everyone,
In preperation for tomorrow I have been testing my way into the zen hall ... I keep getting kicked out - actually don't know if I'm properly in.
I'm unsure if I'm pushing the right buttons.
If I remember correctly there were some instructions and tips posted about this long way back. Does anyone know where they can be found, or alternately could someone take the time to give a really simple a,b,c on how to get into the zen hall .. and stay there. This computer illiterate would be very graetful.

Has the time of our gathering tomorrow already been set??

Thanks and gassho

Hi Nadi,

I can answer one of your questions: If you are the only one in the zen hall you have to open another browser window so you appear twice in the hall. This is because the software for the zen hall is usually used for teleconferencing, so when only one person is there it tries to save bandwidth. If there are multiple people in the room, then it isn't necessary.

As for the "gathering"', I'm guessing you are refrring to the saturday sitting. I must confess it has been a few weeks since I sat live, so I am not sure exactly what time that happens. Hopefully someone can answer that for both of us or I can try to find it posted somewhere.

Hope that helps a little!

Hi Dosho,
Thanks so much for your speedy response. I will try what you suggest.
About the 'gathering' tomorrow ... guess I thought our ANGO season would start with a sitting of the same name but could not find a posting on it ... must be the Saturday sitting as you say. I'm off to track down the time, I'll let you know if I find anything.
Looking forward to making a more then brief appearance. Thanks again.

Hello again Nadi,

Here's the thread on the Saturday sittings and monthly Zazenkai: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=668

If that's correct, there's a regular sitting Saturday (8/29) at 10pm Japan time. Then there would be a 4 hour Zazenkai next Saturday (9/5), starting at 9pm Japan time. There is a time converter linked on that page.

Of course, with Ango and recent visitors in Tsukuba, things have been shuffled a bit, so hopefully Jundo will let us know if the info I linked is correct for this and coming weeks.

Yes, the "regular Saturday sitting" above will be the ...

"OFFICIAL START OF ANGO" Hooray! Hoozah! :)

The Zazenkai will start at the usual time ...

10 p.m. Japan time (currently New York 9am, Los Angeles 6am, London 2pm and Paris 3pm, Saturday) ... available for viewing and sitting "at any time" thereafter in recording ...

... but may run a tad long as I add a short talk and a couple of special items to mark the moment.

As always, links will be posted on the sit-a-long Blog a little before ...

http://blog.beliefnet.com/treeleafzen/

I am not sure if folks will also be sitting in the Sitting Room at that time, but of course, everyone is welcome to do so.

There will also be a series of talks and such dedicated or connected to Ango this coming week, and in the coming weeks.

Huh. I came back here after a long absence (I didn't literally even check the forums for months and my practice has been lax too) and it seems Ango is starting today. I'm not quite sure if I can commit to doing all those things - I have a rather limited internet connectivity at the moment (and like it that way) and no Skype installed for example - but I do make a commitment to sit two full periods of Shikantaza zazen each and every day from now on and also try to participate at the other activities when possible.

I have been "away" (though, oddly, wherever I was, it was still "here") and I have just come across this.

Two questions, please. First, have I missed the Ango boat now anyway as it's a week or so after the start?

Secondly, I would like to commit to this. My schedule and the strength of the internet signal at home is such that I have rarely been able to join you "live" for anything, but I have sat with you at another time and still felt that I am with you, and no doubt that would be the case here. And as for managing the technical side like skype, well good grief, but I'll try. But the nature of my family life and work is such that whilst I would like to commit to all this I know that I will probably fail to keep this all up. I'm not saying I would plan to fail, I will commit to do it and mean it, it's just that, realistically I know that life will get in the way. Is that an acceptable commitment? Or is it meaningless and should I sit it out and wish the rest of you every benefit from this?

Martin,

You are never too late to catch this boat. Anway, the few days you missed ... add them on at the end! 8)

Martin, as for Skype.. it's veryyy easy to use. I downloaded it the other day. Only problem I had was needing to purchase a USB headset mic. I had one with the normal jacks for the soundcard/front ports. Skype and other voice chat program did not like them whatsoever. People said I sounded fine, but they sounded like crappp ...wierd crackly noises and such. not just poor quality.

Also if on Skype it would have a tendency to start cutting in and out. A firned of mine said most of the times it did that he could hear me. Had the same issue using my regular speakers and a seperate mic. However, the USB headset fixed everything.

well, i'm not on the bus, but things happen that way sometimes -- in my case, seeing the zen hall full this morning was what it took to get me to make a committment to you all -- and i won't be meeting all the ango committments listed, but i make a 100 day committment to sit twice daily, minimum, in the zen hall, or at least on the scheduler, or if already scheduled, with other treeleafer(s), and to be in the zen hall for every saturday sit

to be honest, i have to say that i won't be reading or posting/discussing much, so can't commit to that, it still doesn't feel right for me -- and last i knew, my laptop(500mhz) is below skypes minimum requirements

so just wanted you to know that although i'm not doing ango, i am, in the hall, in support of this effort that everyone is making, to do nothing

Jundo

Thank you. Please count me in. I will sit more, including a lunch time session when I'm not in a full day Mediation, make more time for my aged mum, and go without gossiping on my local football club's internet chat board, which is anyway a waste of the time that I definitely don't have. And I will do my best to catch up with all the recordings.

Dave

Thank you for the encouragement about Skype. I'm going to get to grips with this, I really am. Or, maybe, I'll see if I can get my son to get to grips with it for me.

Hi James,

Just PM me and suggest a time (but please speak to me in Japan time)

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=248

I am free most late morningas or from 10pm to midnight (Japan time).

It is very relaxed in the Soto way, do not expect some mysterious dialogue where I ask for an answer to a Koan and then hit you no matter what you say. In Soto, it is more "Hi, how ya been? how's practice going?"
